ゾウの鼻はなぜ長い
Why the elephant’s nose is long

　動物園で人気者の鼻(はな)の長い動物といえばゾウですが、実はゾウの鼻は本当は短かったのです。
　The most popular animal in zoo is elephant, however, elephant’s nose was actually short.

　これは、なぜゾウの鼻が長くなったかのお話しです。
　This is a story why the elephant’s nose got longer.

　むかしむかし、あるところに、ゾウの親子がいました。
　Once upon a time in certain place, there was a family of elephants.

　もちろん、鼻の短いゾウの親子です。
　Of course their noses were short.

　ある日の事、子ゾウがお母さんゾウに尋ねました。
　One day, baby elephant asked his mother.

「あの川に住んでいるワニさんの大好きな食べ物は、なあに？」
‘What is alligator’s favorite food?’

　するとお母さんゾウは、びっくりした顔で言いました。
　His mother replied with a look of surprise.

「坊や、そんな恐ろしい事を聞くものではありませんよ」
‘Baby, you shouldn’t ask such a horrible thing.’

「そうだよ。そんな事を聞いてはいけないよ」
‘Mother’s right. You shouldn’t say that.’

　隣にいた、お父さんゾウも言いました。
　His father also said.

「うん、わかった。もう聞かないよ」
‘I see. I won’t ask that anymore.’

　子ゾウはそう言いましたが、でもどうしても気になったので、後で川にいるワニのところへ言って尋ねました。
　However, the baby elephant couldn’t stand still and went to alligator in the river.

「ねえ、ワニさん。あなたの好きな食べ物はなあに？」
‘Alligator, what’s your favorite food?’

　するとワニは、
　Alligator said

「へっへへへ。オレの好きな食べ物は子ゾウさ。父さんや母さんに聞かなかったのかい？」
‘My favorite food is baby elephant. didn’t you ask your father and mother?

と、言って、子ゾウの短い鼻に、
　And the alligator

「ガブッ！！」
"Gabuu! !"

と、噛みついたのです。
　Bit elephant’s short nose.

　ビックリした子ゾウは体を後ろに引っ張って、ワニの口から鼻を引き抜こうとしました。
　Baby elephant threw himself back and tried to release his nose from alligator’s mouth.

　しかしワニは鼻に噛みついたまま、なかなか放してくれません。
　However, the alligator kept biting on elephant’s nose.

「ウーン、ウーン、ウーン」
"Oooh Oooh Oooh"

　子ゾウが体を後ろへ引っ張りますが、
　Baby elephant threw himself back,

「ギュー、ギュー、ギュー」
"Gyuu Gyuu Gyuu"

と、ワニも負けじと鼻を引っ張ります。
　Alligator pulled elephant’s nose as much as possible.

　子ゾウとワニの両方が力一杯引っ張ったので、
　They pulled each other with all their strength,

　そのうち子ゾウの鼻がだんだんと伸びていきました。
　Elephant’s nose in time got longer and longer.

「もう、離してよ！　痛いじゃないか！」
‘Let me go! It hurts!’

　とうとう子ゾウが怒って、伸びた鼻でワニを引っぱたきました。
　Finally, baby elephant got angry and smashed the alligator with his elongated nose.

　ビューーーン。
　Biyuuuu!

　引っぱたかれたワニは、そのまま遠くへ飛んで行ってしまいました。
　The alligator flew away.

　こんな訳で、子ゾウの鼻は長くなってしまったのです。
　In this way, baby elephant’s nose got longer.

　 そしてそれから生まれたゾウは、みんな鼻が長くなったという事です。
　After that every elephant’s nose was long.
