　イソップ は、あるひ ひまつぶし に、ぞうせんじょ に よって みました。
　One day, Aesop stopped by at a shipyard to pass the time.

　ぞうせんじょ の しょくにんたち は、へんな ひと が きた と おもって、
　The shipbuilders at the shipyard saw Aesop and thought he is a weird guy.

「くやしかったら、なんとか いってみろ」
“If you are vexed, say something!”

と、わいわい からかいました。
　They teased and said to Aesop.

　そこで イソップ は、こんな はなし を したのです。
　So Aesop replied with this story.

「むかしむかし、まだ この ちきゅう が かたち も なくて、みず しか なかった とき の こと です。
“Once upon a time, when this Earth has nothing but water,

　ゼウス の かみ は、みず だけでは こまる と かんがえて りく を よびました。
　Zeus, the god, called Gaia because he thought he needed a new element on Earth.

　そして、『これから ３かい に わけて、この ちきゅう ぜんたい に ある うみ の みず を のみなさい』と いいつけました。
　He ordered Gaia, “swallow the sea water on this whole Earth in three gulps.”

　りく は さっそく、しごと に かかりました。
　Gaia immediately started as she was ordered.

　１かいめ に、ぐーっ と のむ と、やま が でてきました。
　In her first gulp, the mountains appeared.

　それから ２かいめ に、ぐーっ と のむ と、へいや が あらわれました。
　In her second gulp, the plains are revealed.

と、いうわけ だから、こんど ３かいめ に りく が ぐーっ と やれば、うみ は なくなってしまう から、あなたがた も しごと が なくなる わけですよ」
　And if she takes her third gulp, the water on the Earth will be all gone, and all of you will lose your job.”

　この おはなし は、じぶん より も あたま の よい ひと を からかう と、ひどい しっぺがえし を くらう ということ を おしえています。
　This story shows if people make fun of someone who is better than they are, they will have a tit-for-tat.
