　ある いえ に かわれている イヌ が、もうじゅう と たたかう ように くんれん されて いました。
　There was a dog that had been brought up to be able to fight against ferocious animals.

　あるひ、たくさん の もうじゅう が せいぞろい している のを みた この イヌ は、
　One day when the dog saw a number of ferocious animals getting together,

　くびわ を ひきちぎって まち に にげだし ました。
　he bit his collar and tore it, then ran away towards the town.

　まるで うし の ように たくましい とうけん が にげてくる のを、ほか の イヌたち が みて、
　When other dogs saw him that looked almost like a sturdy bull run away, they all wondered what he was running away from, then asked him.

「きみ は、なぜ にげて きたの？」
“Why are you running away?”

と、たずねます と、とうけん は、
　Then he answered,

「たしかに ぼく は、まいにち はらいっぱい、うまいもの を くって ぜいたく に くらして いるよ。
“Obviously I've been having such a luxurious life by eating a big and delicious meal every day.

　だけど、ライオン だの クマ だの を あいて に たたかわされる の だから、
　But I'm forced to fight against lions and bears,

　いつ だって、『こんど は しぬ か？』、『こんど は しぬ か？』と、おそろしくて しかたが ないんだ」
　so I cannot help getting scared and thinking like “Am I dying soon?”

　これ を きいて、ふつう の イヌたち は おたがいに、
　Hearing his answer, other dogs said to one another,

「ぼくたち は びんぼう だけど、しあわせ なんだなあ。
“We're poor, but we should be happy

　ライオン や クマ なんか と たたかわず に すむんだから」
　because we're not forced to fight against lions and bears.”

と、いいあいました。
