びょうぶ の トラ
A tiger on the folding screen

(いっきゅうさんのおはなし)

　むかしむかし、いっきゅうさん と いう、とんち で ひょうばん の こぞうさん が いました。
　A long time ago, there lived a young Buddhist priest called Ikkyu who has a reputation as witty.

　いっきゅうさん の とんち の ひょうばん を きいて、とのさま が おしろ に いっきゅうさん を まきいれました。
　Because the load heard Ikkyu’s reputation, he called Ikkyu to the castle.



「さっそくじゃが、そこに ある びょうぶ の トラ を しばりあげて くれぬか。
“I know it sounds a bit rushed, but can you catch and tie up the tiger on that folding screen?

　よなか に びょうぶ から ぬけでして わるいこと ばかり する ので、ほとほと こまって おった のじゃ」
　Since the tiger gets away from the screen at midnight and does bad things, we are having terrible time.”

　もちろん、ひょうぶ に かかれた え の トラ が でてくる なんて、うそ に きまっています。
　Of course it was certainly a lie that the tiger gets away from the screen.

　しかし ゆうめいな えかき が かいた の でしょうか、
　But it looked like the tiger was drawn by a famous painter,

　びょうぶ に かかれた トラ は キバ を むいて、いまにも おそいかかって きそうでした。
　it seemed that the tiger was going to attack with its fangs bared.

「ほんとうに、すごい トラ ですね。
“It is a really great tiger.

　それでは、しばりあげて ごらん に いれます。
　Well then, I will catch and tie up the tiger.

　なわ を、ようい して ください」
　Would you please give me a rope?”

「おおっ、やってくれるか」
“Oh, can you do it?”

「はい。もちろん ですとも」
“Sure, I can.”

　いっきゅうさん は そう いう と、ねじりはちまき を して うでまくり を しました。
　As Ikkyu said so, he put a headband twisted around his head and rolled up his sleeves.

　そして けらい が もってきた なわ を うけとる と、いっきゅうさん は とのさま に たのみました。
　When he received a rope which a retainer brought for him, he asked the load,

「それでは、トラ を びょうぶ から おいだして ください。
“Sir, would you turn out the tiger from the folding screen, please?

　すぐに、しばって ごらん に いれます」
　Then I will tie it up immediately.”

　それ を きいた とのさま は、おもわず いいました。
　When the load heard what he said, he said without thinking,

「なに を いうか！　びょうぶ に かかれた トラ を、おいだせる わけ が なかろうが」
“What are you saying? How can I turn out the tiger drawn on the folding screen?”

　すると いっきゅうさん は、にっこり わらって いいました。
　Then Ikkyu smiled and said,

「それでは、びょうぶ からは トラ は でてこない の ですね。
“If so, the tiger will not come out from the folding screen.

　それ を きいて、あんしん しました。
　It relieved my anxiety.

　いくら わたし でも、でてこない トラ を しばる ことは できません からね」
　I cannot possibly tie up a tiger that won’t come out from there.”

　それ を きいて、とのさま は おもわず て を たたきました。
　The load clapped his hands despite himself as he heard what Ikkyu said.

「あっぱれ！　あっぱれな とんちじゃ！
“Well done! Your wit does your credit!

　ほうび を つかわす から、また くる が よいぞ」
　I will give you a reward, and you come to visit me again.”



　こうして いっきゅうさん は たくさん の ほうび を もらって、まんぞくそう に おてら に かえりました。
　This is why Ikkyu returned to the temple happily with a lot of reward.
