　むかしむかし、ある むら に おはな と いう キツネ と、こんベえ と いう タヌキ が すんでいました。
　A long time ago, there lived a fox called Ohana and a raccoon dog called Gonbei in a village.

　にひき とも、ばける のが とても じょうず です。
　Both of them are good at transforming themselves.

　あるひ の こと、おはな と ごんベえ が、みち で バッタリ と であいました。
　One day, Ohana and Gonbei came across each other on a atreet.

　ごんべえ は、わざ と ていねい に いいました。
　Gonbei politely talked to Ohana on purpose,

「おはなさん は ばける のが とても じょうずだ そうだけど、おいら と どっち が じょうず かな？」
“I heard you are good at transforming, but I wonder if you are better than me.”

「さあ？　どっち が じょうず か、ばけくらべ を してみない と わかんないわ」
“Well. I don’t know until we have a competition in transforming. ”

　それ を きいた とたん、ごんベえ が はら を たてました。
　As soon as Gonbei heard that, he got angry.

「よし、そんなら どっち が じょうず か、ばけくらべ を しよう」
“All right. Then let’s have a competition to see who is better.”

「いいわよ。あす の ばん、おみやさん の けいだい へ きて ちょうだい」
“Fine. Come to the precincts of the temple tomorrow night.”

　おはな は それだけ いうと、かえって いきました。
　That was all she said and she left home.

(おんな の くせ に、なんて なまいきな キツネ だ。
“She is such a cheeky fox for a woman.

　みていろ。かならず まかしてやる。
　Just you wait. I will beat you up.

　・・・だが、なに に ばけたら いいのだろう？)
　… But what should I transform to?”

　ごんべえ は なに に ばけたら おはな に かつ か、いっしょうけんめい に かんがえました。
　Gonbei took time to consider what he should transform to beat her.

　なにしろ おはな の ばける はなよめすがた は、ごんべえ も ほれぼれ する ぐらい きれい で、
　Anyhow, when Ohana transforms to a bride, she is so adorable even for Gonbei

　いつも にんげん の むすめさん と まちがえて しまいます。
and he always cannot tell if it is a real human lady.

　それに ばける のが じょうず な ごんべえ でも、おとこ なので はなよめすがた に だけは ばける こと が できません。
　At the same time, even though Gonbei is good at transforming, he cannot transform to a bride because he is a man.



　さて いっぽう、キツネ の おはな はと いうと、
　On the other hand, as for Ohana, the fox,

「ごんべえったら、どうせ わたし に かてっこ ないのに。
“I’m sure Gonbei will lose.

　まあ いいわ。

　もう にど と ばけくらべ を しよう なんか、いいだせない ように してやる」
　I will beat him so bad and make him feel he doesn’t want to have any more competition again.”

と、いって、なんども なんども はなよめすがた に ばける れんしゅう を しました。
　She said so and practiced transforming to a bride again and again.

　さて、いよいよ ばけくらべ の よる に なりました。
　In the meantime, the night of the competition had come.

　おはな は いつも の ように、はなよめすがた に ばけました。
　As for Ohana, she transformed to a bride as always.

　れんしゅう を した だけ あって、ほんとう に うつくしい はなよめすがた です。
　Thanks to her practice, she transformed to a really beautiful bride.

　そして おはな は ほんもの の はなよめ みたい に はずかしそう に うつむきながら、おみやさん へ いきました。
　She went to the shrine as if she was a real bride with casting her eyes down.

　ところ が とりい を くぐろう と して、ふと した を みると、
　However, when she was going through the gateway of the shrine, she happened to look down

　ホカホカ と ゆげ の たっている まんじゅう が おちている では ありませんか。
　and found a steaming hot manju(a bun) on the ground.

　おはな は おもわず、つば を のみました。
　Ohana swallowed in spite of herself.

　あたり を みまわしました が、ごんべえ は まだ きて いない よう です。
　She looked around, but Gonbei had not arrived yet.

(うふふ。いま の うち だわ)
“Heh-heh, I should eat this right now.”

　おはな は いそい で まんじゅう を ひろって、くち の なか へ いれよう と しました。
　She picked up the manju quickly and tried to put it in her mouth.

　その とたん、まんじゅう が パッ と タヌキ に かわった の です。
　Just at the moment, the manju transformed to the raccoon dog instantly.

「あははははは。いくら うつくしい はなよめ に ばけて も、やっぱり くいしんぼう の キツネ だなあ」
“A-ha-ha-ha! Even though you transformed to a beautiful bride, you are such a greedy fox.”

「！！！」
“!!!”

　はずかしく なった おはな は はなよめすがた に ばけて いる のも わすれて、しっぽ を だした まま にげて しまいました。
　Ohana was so embarrassed that she forgot she was transforming to a bride and ran away with her tail out.
