　さむらい が すみよしじんじゃ の さんどう で、しゃっくり が でて、とまらず に こまっておりました。
　There was a samurai on approach to Sumiyoshi Shrine. He was at a loss about how to stop his long-lasting hiccups.

「だれか、しゃっくり を とめて くれぬかのう。れい は するのだが」
“I wish someone could help me get rid of my hiccups. I’m willing to give a reward.”

　すると、みちばた に ねていた こじき が、むくむく と おきあがり、いきなり、
　Then, a beggar, who was lying on the roadside, got up slowly and exclaimed suddenly,

「おのれ、おや の かたき、かくごしろ！」
“I’ll avenge my parents’ death. Say your prayers!”

と、たけ の ぼう を ふりまわして きました。
brandishing a bamboo stick.

「おいおい！　せっしゃ、おや の かたき など と いわれる おぼえ は ない。あわてるな」
“Not so fast! I have no reason to be avenged. Calm down.”

 すると、こじき は、きゅう に こえ を やわらげて、
　Then the beggar quickly softened his voice and said,

「おさむらいさま。しゃっくり は、とまりましたか？」
“Have your hiccups gone yet?”

「うむ、とまった、とまった」
“Oh yes, it did stop.”

「では、おれい に、いちもん くださりませ」
“Then please spare me some change as a reward.”
