　あるところ に、びんぼうながや が ありました。
　There was a shabby row house in some place.

　その ながや に、もさく と いう おとこ が こしてきました。
　A guy named Mosaku moved into the row house.

　ところ が この おとこ、いったい なに を して くらしている の やら、まいあさ はやく でかけて は ひのくれ に かえってきます が、しょうばいどうぐ ひとつ もって いきません。
　Nobody knew what he did for a living since he left early in the morning and came home at sunset without any business tools with him.

　ふしぎ で ならない やぬし の おやじ が、あるとき きいて みました。
　One day, a guy who was the landlord of the house wondered and asked him about his job.

「おら の しょうばい か？　おら の しょうばい は、ひろいや だ」
“My job? I’m a gleaner.”

「ひろいや？　はて、それ は どういう こと だ？」
“A gleaner? What exactly do you do?”

「なあに、まいにち まちんなか を あるいて まわれば、なにか ひとつ は ひろうて かえれるもんだ。おら、それ で くらしてるんだ」
“If you wander around the town every day, you should be able to find something good. That’s how I make a living.”

「・・・・・・？」
“…..?”

　おやじ には、よく いみ が わかりません。
　The landlord had completely no idea what Mosaku said.

 （ようし、それなら ひとつ）
“Ok, I have an idea,”

と、おやじ は つぎ の あさはやく、もさく の あと を そっと つけて いきました。
the landlord thought and he secretly followed Mosaku the next morning.

　そんなこと とは つゆしらず、もさく は とおり を まっすぐ あるいて いきます。
　Not knowing it, Mosaku was walking straight on the street.

　まち の なかほど を すぎても あいかわらず、てくてく あるいて いくばかり。
　He past the middle of the town but still just kept going.

　やがて じんじゃ の けいだい を とおり、となり の まち まで やってきました が、なにひとつ ひろう ようす は ありません。
　Then he passed the temple grounds and got to the neighboring town, but it didn’t seem like he was going to pick up anything.

　こんな ちょうし で まち と いう まち を ぜんぶ あるきまわる うち に、ゆうがた に なりました。
　As he kept walking from town to town, the sun started to set.

　もさく も あきらめた のか、やっと いえ に もどる ようす です。
　Mosaku seemed to have given up and head home.

　おかげ で おやじ も くたびれはてて もどってきました が、ハッ と き が つくと、どうやら ふところ の おかね を にひゃくもん を おとしていました。
　When the landlord also returned home feeling exhausted, he noticed that he dropped his money in his pocket.

「あいつ の せいで、ろくなこと は ねえ」
“That guy brings bad luck,”

と、ひとりごと を いっている と、そこヘ もさく が かえってきました。
as he was talking to himself, Mosaku came home.

（はら は たつ が、もんく を いうわけには いかんわい）
　He thought, “I’m so mad at him but maybe I shouldn’t yell at him,”

　おやじ は しらんかお で、いいました。
　but he pretended nothing happened and said

 「きょう は ええ ひより で ひと も おおかったろうし、さぞ ええもの を ひろったろう」
“I guess there were more people in town today and you found better items than usual.”

「それ が おやじどん、きょう は いつになく ふけいき じゃった。けれども、かえりがけ に そこ の ろじ で にひゃくもん を ひろうたんで、まあ、いちにち あるいた かい は ありました」
“Oh, dude. Business was the slowest today. But luckily, I found some money on the street nearby on the way back home. I could say it was worth walking.”
