　むかしむかし、てんし が しろいはね を ひろげながら、これから かみさま の ところ へ いく おんなのこ に はなして きかせました。
　Once upon a time, an angel told a little girl who was going to God while spreading its white wings.

「いいですか。
“Listen.

　しんで かみさま の ところ へ いく こども には、この わたし の ような てんし が むかえにくるのですよ。
　An angel like me comes to pick up a dead child who is going to God.

　そして、そのこ が いちばん すきだった ところ へ つれていって、いっしょ に はな を あつめるのです。
　And the angel takes the child to their most favorite places and gathers flowers together.

　その はな は かみさま の ところ へ もっていく と、ちじょう に あったときより も ずっとずっと きれい に さくのです。
　When the flowers are brought to God, they will bloom much more beautifully than they did on earth.

　なかでも、かみさま が とくべつ に キス なさった はな は、こえ が でるように なって うた を うたうのです」
　Above all, if God kisses the flowers, they will get a voice and sing songs.”

　そういって てんし は、おんなのこ と いっしょ に おんなのこ が いちばん すきだった こきょう の はなぞの へ とんでいきました。
　Then the angel flew with the little girl to her most favorite flower garden in her hometown.

「さあ、どの はな を もっていくのですか？」
The angel asked, “which flowers would you like to take with you?”

　てんし が たずねる と、おんなのこ は バラ の き を ゆびさしました。
　The little girl pointed out a rose tree.

　てんし が みてみる と いっぽん の えだ が おれていて、ひらきかけた つぼみ が ひからびて いたのです。
　When the angel looked at it, one of the branches was broken and the swelling buds were dried up.

　「かわいそうに。では、かみさま の ところ で はな が さきますように」
　“Oh, poor flowers. I hope they will bloom when they come close to God.”

　てんし は、にっこりして その はな を とりました。
　The angel put on a smile and picked the buds.

　それから ふたり は、きれいな はな を たくさん つみました。
　Then the two gathered a lot of beautiful flowers.



　さて、はな を つんでしまう と、てんし は おんなのこ を よる の まち に つれていきました。
　After gathering flowers, the angel took the little girl to a town at night.

　その くらい みちばた には、がらくた が やま の ように つんであります。
　At the side of the dark street, there was a heap of garbage.

　てんし は その がらくた に ある うえきばち の かけら に はいった、ひからびた ののはな を ゆびさしました。
　The angel pointed out some dried-up wild flowers in a broken flowerpot.

「あれも、もっていきましょうね。そのわけ は、とびながら はなしてあげますよ」
“Let’s take them too. I’ll tell you the reason later.”

　こうして ふたり は、かみさま の ところ に むかって とんでいきました。
　The two then flew to God.

　てんし は とびながら、おんなのこ に はなしました。
　While flying, the angle said to the little girl,

「さっき の まち の せまい ちかしつ には、びょうき の こ が いました。
“there was a sick child in the small basement in the town we passed by.

　その こ の あそび と いったら、おひさま が さんじゅっぷん ぐらい さしこむ まど から、ひかり に て を かざしてみる ぐらい の ものでした。
　The only thing the child could enjoy was to hold her hands against the sunlight from the window for about half an hour.

　その こ が はじめて はる の もり を しった のは、となりのこ が もってきてくれた みどり の えだ を みた ときです。
　She first got to know the forest in spring when a child in the neighborhood brought her a tree branch with green leaves on it.

　その えだ を あたま の うえ に もっていく と、ことり が いっぱい さえずっている もり の なか に いるような き が したのです」
　When she held the branch over her head, she felt as if she had been in the forest where a lot of birds chirped.”

　おんなのこ は、てんし の かお を のぞきこみました。
　The little girl looked into the angel’s face.

　てんし は おんなのこ に、やさしく ほほえみました。
　The angel smiled at her and continued,

「それから、となり の こ は ののはな を もってきてくれました。
“Then, another child in the neighborhood brought her a wild flower.

　その はな には ね が ついていた ので、びょうき の こ は うえきばち に うえて たいせつ に せわ を しました。
　The flower had its root with it, so the sick child planted it in a flower pot and took good care of it.

　おかげ で はな は すくすく と そだって、まいとし さく よう に なり、その こ の たからもの に なったのです。
　Thanks to her, the flower grew well and bloomed every year, and it became her treasure.

　だって、はな は その こ の ため だけ に きれい に さいて、いい かおり を ふりまいていたんですもの」
　It’s because the flower bloomed beautifully and spread the scent only for her.

　てんし は、おおきく はばたきました。
　The angel flew even higher.

「でも、やがて びょうき の こ は、はな を みながら しんでしまいました。
“But the sick girl passed away while looking at the flower.

　その はな は わすれられて、ひからびて、すてられて しまったのです。
　Those flower became dried and discarded because nobody took care of it.

　それ が、この はな なのです。
　And this is the flower that we were talking about.

　だから この はなは 、どんな に りっぱな にわ の はな より も、ずっと すてきなのですよ」
　So that’s why this flower is more beautiful than any other beautiful flowers in gardens.”

　はなし を きいた おんなのこ は、てんし に たずねました。
　The girl was so curious that asked the angel,

「ふーん。でも、どうして そんなに、その はな の こと を しっているの？」
“I see. But why do you know so much about this flower?”

　てんし は ニッコリ わらう と、こえました。
　The angel put on a big smile and answered,

「それはね。わたし が、その びょうき の こども だったのですよ」
“because I was the sick girl.”



　ちょうど そのとき、ふたり は かみさま の くに に つきました。
　Then, the two arrived at God’s world.

　かみさま は ひからびた ののはな に キス を して、こえ を あたえて くれました。
　God kissed the dried buds and gave a voice to them.

　それから かみさま は、やさしく おんなのこ を むね に だいて いいました。
　God gently held the little girl in his hands and said,

「よく きたね。これから は、きみ が しんだ こどもたち を ここ へ つれて くるのだよ」
“welcome. From now on, you take the dead children here.”

「えっ？　わたしが？」
　“What? Me?” she said.

　き が つく と、かみさま に だかれた おんなのこ の せなか には、ちいさな まっしろい はね が はえていました。
　Then, she found that she had white wings on her back held in God’s arms.

　おんなのこ は、てんし に なったのです。
　In other words, the little girl turned into an angel.
