　むかしむかし、ある まち には、うつくしい『しあわせ の おうじ』 の ぞう が ありました。
　Once upon a time, there was a beautiful statue of "the Prince of happiness" in a town.

　その『しあわせ の おうじ』 の からだ には、きんいろ に ひかりかがやく きんぱく が はって あります。
　The body of "the Prince of happiness" was coated with glittering gold leaf.

　あおい ひとみ は サファイア で、こし の けん には おおきい ルビー が ついています。
　Its blue eyes were made of sapphire and the sword on its waist had a big ruby on it.

　まち の ひとたち は、この すばらしい おうじ の ように しあわせ に なりたい と ねがいました。
　The townspeople wished themselves happiness as this beautiful Prince represented.



　ふゆ が ちかづいてきた、ある さむい ゆうがた の こと です。
　In the evening of a cold day when the winter was just around the corner,

　まち に、いちわ の ツバメ が とんできました。
a swallow flew to the town.

「ふうーっ。ずいぶん と、おくれちゃったな。みんな は もう、エジプト に ついたのかなあ？
“Phew! I'm left far behind. I wonder if my fellows have already arrived in Egypt.

　きょう は ここ で やすん で、あす たび に でよう」
　I'll rest here and hit the road tomorrow.”

　ツバメ は しあわせ の おうじ の あしもと に とまり、そこ で ねむろう と しました。
　The swallow perched on the Prince's foot and tried to sleep there.

　すると ポツポツ と、しずく が おちて きました。
　Then, some waterdrops fell onto him.

「あれれ、あめ かな？　くも も ないのに、へん だな。・・・あっ、おうじさま が ないている。もしもし、どうした の ですか？」
“Is it raining? It’s strange because there’s no cloud in the sky… Oh, the Prince is crying. Hello, what’s the matter?”

　ツバメ が たずねる と、おうじ が こたえました。
　The swallow asked and then the Prince answered,

「こうして たかい ところ に いる と、まちじゅう の かなしい できごと が め に はいって くるんだ。
“Since I’ve been up here, I can see the sad things happening all over the town.

　でも ぼく には、どうする こと も できない。だから ないて いるんだよ」
　But there’s nothing I can do to help them. So I’m crying.”

「かなしい できごと？」
“Sad things?”

「ほら、あそこ に ちいさな いえ が あるだろう。こども が びょうき で、オレンジ が たべたい と ないている。
“See the small house there? The boy is sick and crying, saying he wants to eat some oranges.

　おかあさん は いっしょうけんめい はたらいて いる が、まずしくて かえないんだ」
　Though his mother works hard, she can’t afford them.”

「それ は、おきのどく に」
“Oh, poor thing.”

「ツバメくん、おねがい だ。ぼく の けん の ルビー を、あそこ へ はこんで おくれよ」
“Mr. Swallow, please do me a favor. Can you bring the ruby on my sword to him?”

「うん。わかった」
“Sure. I’ll do it.”

　ツバメ は おうじ の こし の けん の ルビー を はずして、ねつ で くるしんでいる おとこのこ の まくらもと に ルビー を おきました。
　The swallow removed the ruby from the sword on the Prince’s waist and put it beside his pillow.

「つらい だろう けど、がんばってね」
“I know you’ve been through a hard time, but hang in there.”

　ツバメ は つばさ で、おとこのこ を そっと あおいで かえってきました。
　The swallow fanned his wings at him and flew back.

　おうじ の ところ へ かえってきた ツバメ は、ある こと に きづきました。
　When he returned to the Prince, the swallow noticed something different.

「ふしぎ だな。こんな に さむい のに、なんだか からだ が ポカポカ するよ」
“It’s strange. It’s so cold out here but I feel warm.”

「それ は、きみ が よいこと を したからさ。ツバメくん」
“It’s because you did a good deed, Mr. Swallow.”



　つぎ の ひ、おうじ は また ツバメ に たのみました。
　The next day, the Prince asked the swallow a favor again.

「ぼく の め の サファイア を ひとつ、さいのう の ある まずしい わかもの に はこんで やって くれないか？」
“Can you bring one of the sapphires in my eyes to a poor and talented young guy?”

「でも ぼく、そろそろ しゅっぱつ しなくちゃ」
“But it’s about time for me to leave now.”

「おねがい だ。きょう いちにち だけ だよ。ねえ、ツバメくん」
“I’m begging you. Just this once. Please, Mr. Swallow.”

「・・・うん」
“Ok…”

　ツバメ が サファイア を はこんで やる と、わかもの は め を かがやかせて よろこびました。
　When the swallow brought the sapphire, the young guy was so glad with his starry eyes.

「これ で パン が かえる！　さくひん も、かきあげられる ぞ！」
“Now I can buy some bread! I can finish writing my book!”



　つぎ の ひ、ツバメ は きょう こそ、たび に でる けっしん を しました。
　The next day, the swallow finally decided to hit the road.

　そして おうじ に、おわかれ を いいました。
　And he said goodbye to the Prince.

「おうじさま。これから ぼく は、なかま の いる エジプト に いきます。
“Prince, I’m going to Egypt where there are my fellows.

　エジプト は とても あたたかくて、おひさま が いっぱい なんです」
　Egypt is so warm and has a lot of sunshine.”

　けれど おうじ は、また たのみ ました。
　But the Prince asked the swallow a favor again.

「どうか、もう ひとばん だけ いて おくれ。あそこ で、マッチうり の おんなのこ が ないているんだ。
　“Can you please stay one more night? There is a girl who tries to sell matches in the street.

　おかね を かせがない と おとうさん に ぶたれる のに、マッチ を ぜんぶ おとして しまったんだ。
　She knew she was going to be hit by his father if she didn’t make money, but she dropped all the matches she had.

　だから のこった サファイア を、おんなのこ に あげて ほしいんだ」
　So, I want you to bring the other sapphire to her.”

「それでは、おうじさま の め が みえなくなって しまいますよ」
“In that case, you will be blind, Prince.”

「いいんだ。あの こ が しあわせ に なれる の なら、め が みえなくとも」
“I don’t care if I go blind or not as long as the girl gets happy.”

「おうじさま・・・」
“Prince…”

　ひと の しあわせ の ため に じぶん の め を なくした おうじ を みて、ツバメ は けっしん しました。
　Looking at the Prince who had lost his eyes for people’s happiness, the swallow made a decision.

「おうじさま、ぼく は もう たび に でません。ずっと、おそば に います。
“Prince, I won’t go anywhere. I’ll stay with you.

　そして、おうじさま の め の かわり を します」
　And I’ll be your eyes.”

「ツバメくん。ありがとう」
“Thank you, Mr. Swallow.”

　それから ツバメ は まちじゅう を とびまわり、まずしい ひとたち の くらし を みて は おうじ に はなして きかせました。
　The swallow got to fly around the town and he told the Prince about the poor people’s lives he saw.

「それでは、ぼく の からだ に ついている きん を ぜんぶ はがして、まずしい ひとたち に わけて くれないか」
“Then, can you peel off all the gold on my body and give it to the poor people”

「わかりました」
“Yes, sir.”

　ツバメ は いいつけどおり おうじ の からだ から きんぱく を はがす と、まずしい ひとたち に とどけて やりました。
　As he was told, the swallow peeled off the gold from the Prince’s body and brought it to the poor.



　やがて、そら から ゆき が まいおちて きました。
　After a while, there was snow falling from the sky.

　とうとう、ふゆ が きたのです。
　At last, winter came.

　さむさ に よわい ツバメ は、こごえて うごけなく なりました。
　The swallow was so sensitive to the cold that he was chilled to the bone and couldn’t move.

「ぼく は、もう だめ です。おうじさま、さようなら。よいこと を して、ぼく は しあわせ でした」
“I think this is it. Goodbye, Prince. I was happy to be of help to people.

　ツバメ は さいご の ちから で おうじ に キス を する と、そのまま ちからつきて しんで しまいました。
　The swallow managed to kiss the Prince, he finally died.

　パチン！
　Snap!

　その とき、おうじ の しんぞう が かなしみ に たえかねて、はじけて しまいました。
　At the same time, the Prince’s heart popped with sorrow.



　つぎ の あさ、まち の ひとたち は しあわせ の おうじ の ぞう が、すっかり きたなく なっている のに きづきました。
　The next morning, the townspeople noticed that the statue of "the Prince of happiness" had gotten dirty.

「うつくしくない おうじ なんか、とかして しまおう」
“Let’s melt the Prince that’s no longer beautiful.

　ところ が ふしぎ な こと に、おうじ の しんぞう だけ は どんな に しても とけませんでした。
　Mysteriously, however, the Prince’s heart wasn’t melted at all no matter what they did.

　そこで おうじ の しんぞう は、そば で しんでいた ツバメ と いっしょ に すてられました。
　Then the heart of the Prince was abandoned with the dead swallow beside him.



　そのころ、かみさま と てんし が この まち へ やってきました。
　Later on, God and an angel came to this town.

「てんし よ。この まち で いちばん うつくしい もの を もって おいで」
“Angel, bring the most beautiful thing in this town,” God told the angel.

　かみさま に いいつけられて てんし が もってきた のは、おうじ の しんぞう と ツバメ でした。
　In fact, what the angel brought was the Prince’s heart and the dead swallow.

　それ を みて、かみさま は うなずきました。
　Looking at them, God nodded.

「よく やった。これこそ が、この まち で いちばん うつくしい もの だ。
　“Well done! These are exactly the most beautiful things in this town.

　おうじ と ツバメ は、たいへん よいこと を した。この ふたり は、てんごく に つれて かえって やろう」
　The Prince and the swallow really did good things. I’ll take these two to Heaven.”

　こうして ひとびと を たすける ため に しんだ おうじ と ツバメ は、てんごく で しあわせ に くらした の です。
　After all, the Prince and swallow who helped people and died went to Heaven and lived happily ever after.
