マムシ と ミズヘビ
The Viper and The Water Snake

　ある いずみ に、マムシ が まいにち みず を のみ に きました。
　A viper used to go to a certain spring to drink water everyday.

　その いずみ に すんでいる ミズヘビ は、おもしろく ありません。
　However, a water snake that lived at the spring was not happy about it.

「おい、おれ の いずみ の みず を のむなよ」
”Hey! Don't drink water from my spring.”

と、ミズヘビ は いつも いう の でした。
　The water snake always said to the viper.

「きみ は りく に すむ ヘビ なんだから、あっち に いけ」
　And he also said, “You're a snake that lives on shore. You should go away.”

　いざこざ の ケンカ は まいにち つづき、しだい に ひどく なりました。
　The quarrel went on everyday, and it got worse and worse.

「いっそのこと、ちからずく の はたしあい を やって きめよう じゃないか。
”We'd better arrange a duel, and decide what we should do,

　かった ほう が、りく も みず も じぶん の もの に するんだ」
　which means that the land and the water will be awarded to the winner.”

　マムシ も ミズヘビ も とうとう けっしんし、ついに はたしあい の とき が きました。
　The viper and the water snake made up their mind to fight a duel, and the day was impending.

　すると、それ を ききつけた カエルたち が、マムシ の ところ へ やってきて、
　Frogs that heard about the duel came to the viper right away.

「マムシさん、しっかり やって ください。
”We wish you the best of luck.

　ぼくらは ミズヘビ が きらい ですから、たたかい の ひ には あなた の みかた を しますよ」
　We don't like water snakes, so we'll aid you on the duel day.”

と、いいました。
the frogs said.



　さて いよいよ はたしあい が はじまって、
　Finally the day came, and the duel began.

　マムシ と ミズヘビ が しにものぐるい で たたかっています。
　The viper and the water snake were fighting against each other very fiercely.

　カエルたち は そば で、ただ、
　The frogs stayed nearby, and

「ガー、ガー」
merely croaked.

と、わめきたてる だけ です。
　That was the only thing that the frogs did.

　かったのは、マムシ でした。
　The winner was the viper.

　マムシ は たたかい の あと、カエルたち に、
　After the duel, the viper said to the frogs,

「なんだ！　きみたち は！
”What on earth were you doing during the duel?

　みかた を すると いっていた くせ に、ちから を かさない で うたばかり うたっていた じゃないか」
　You said that you would aid me, but all you did was just croaking rather than aiding.”

と、おこりました。
　The viper got furious at the frogs.

　すると、カエルたち は、
　Then the frogs said,

「そんな こと、わかりきった はなし でしょう。
”It's such an obvious thing for us to do.

　ぼくたち が みかた を する と いう のは、わんりょく では なくて こえ だけ の みかた なの ですよ」
　What we meant was to aid you by voice rather than by physical contact.”



　この おはなし は、
　This story tell us that

　ことば や こえ だけ の おうえん では、なん の やく にも たたない と いう こと を おしえて います。
　aiding verbally is of no use whatsoever.
