　びんぼう な ひと が、びょうき に かかって しにそうに なりました。
　A poor man was almost dying of a disease.

　それで かみさま に、
　Therefore, he prayed to God,

「かみさま、どうか わたし の いのち を たすけて ください。
”Dear God, please save my life.

　たすけて くださったら、ひゃくとう の ウシ を ささげもの に します」
　If you do, I will make an offering of a hundred cows.

と、おいのり しました。

　かみさま は この おとこ を ためそう と おもって、さっそく びょうき を なおして やりました。
　God cured his disease with intent to check whether or not what he meant was true.

　おとこ は、げんき に なりました。
　The man recovered in no time.

　しかし びんぼう ですから、ひゃくとう の ウシ など はじめから もって いない の です。
　However, he was so poor that it was obviously impossible for him to make an offering of a hundred cows in the first place.

　そこで おとこ は ロウ で ウシ を ひゃくとう つくって、さいだん に ささげました。
　Therefore, he made a hundred cows with wax, and presented them at the altar.

　そして、
　Then he said,

「かみさま、どうぞ やくそく の ウシ を おうけとり ください」
“Dear God, please accept these cows as promised.”

と、いいました。

　かみさま は、この おとこ の インチキ に たいして しかえし を しようと かんがえました。
　God thought of retaliating for what he had done.

　それで、この おとこ に ゆめ を みさせて、
　So God made the man have a dream in which God directed,

「うみべ へ いきなさい。
”Go to the beach.

　そうすれば、せんドラクマ の おかね が みつかる だろう」
　You'll find a thousand drachmas there.”

と、おしえて やりました。

　おとこ は とびあがらん ばかり に よろこんで、さっそく はまべ に かけつけました。
　The man became very delighted, and then went off to the beach.

　すると そこには かいぞくたち が いて、たちまち おとこ を つかまえて とおく へ つれさり、うりとばして しまいました。
　There were pirates on the beach when he arrived.  They abducted the man, went off far away, and then sold him there.

　そのとき、たしか に この おとこ は、せんドラクマ の おかね を みる こと は できました。
　Without any concerns for the result, the man sure found a thousand drachmas on the beach.



　この おはなし は、うそつき の いましめ です。
　This story is a warning for lying.
