The Wild Mouse and The House Mouse

　のネズミ と いえネズミ とは、とても なかよし でした。
　A house mouse and a wild mouse were good friends.

　いえネズミ は ともだち の のネズミ に よばれて、
　One day the house mouse was invited for a meal by the wild mouse,

　ごちそう に なりに、いそいそ と の へ でかけました。
　and went out to the field.

　ところが オオムギ と コムギ ばかり たべさせられた ので、こう いいました。
　However, after having eaten only barley and wheat, the house mouse said,

「これじゃあ、きみ、まるで アリ の せいかつだ。
“It seems like an ant's life.

　いえ へ くれば、うまいもの が いっぱい あるから、いっしょ に きて、なんでも おあがりよ」
　You'll be able to get lots of delicious food if you come to my place. Just come and get all you want!”

　そこで にひき は、すぐさま でかけました。
　Then two of them went to the house mouse's place.

　そして いえネズミ が みせた のは、マメ や ムギ の ほか に、
　Besides wheat and barley, the house mouse showed the wild mouse

　ヤシのみ や、チーズ や、ハチミツ や、くだもの でした。
　coconuts, cheese, honey and fruits.

　そこで のネズミ は ビックリ して、いえネズミ の くらし を たいそう ほめて、み の ふしあわせ を なげきました。
　The wild mouse got shocked with what he saw, and complimented the house mouse's life, while he lamented over his misfortune.

　さて、いよいよ ごちそう に て を だそう と した とき、きゅう に にんげん が と を あけました。
　In the meantime, when they were finally about to get some food, a human suddenly opened the door.

　ネズミ は おくびょう ですから、にひき とも その おと に おどろいて かべ の われめ に とびこみました。
　Because a mouse is a cowardly animal, they rushed into a crack of the wall immediately after they heard the sound of the door.

　しばらくして、こんど こそ ごちそう を たべようと しました が、
　After a while, when they tried to get food again,

　また べつ の ひと が へや の なか へ はいって きました。
　another human came into the room.

　それ を みて、ネズミ は また あな に とびこんで かくれました。
　They rushed back into the crack once again.

　そこで のネズミ は おなか の すいた こと など わすれて、ためいき を つきながら いえネズミ に いいました。
　Then the wild mouse forgot about being hungry, and said to the house mouse with a sigh,

「さようなら。
“I'm leaving now.

　きみ は、あぶないめ や、こわいめ に さんざん あいながら、はらいっぱい たべて きげんよく それを あじわって いるが、
　It seems like you've been enjoying delicious food here all you want in spite of facing dangerous and  dreadful situations,

　わたし は いくら みじめ でも、
　but no matter how miserable my life might seem to you,

　こわいめ に あわずに、オオムギ や コムギ を たべて のんき に くらしていくよ」
　I would choose to live cozily with eating only barley and wheat so that I don't have to face such dangerous situations.”



　ビクビク しながら ぜいたく する より は、
　It is better to live cozily, even if it is simple,

　しっそ でも、のんびり いきている ほう が よいのです。
　rather than to live luxuriously in constant fear and anxiety.
