　むかし むかし、ある ところ に、おじいさん と おばあさん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived an old man and woman.

　こころ の やさしい おじいさん は、いちわ の すずめ を かって いました。
　The old man who was kind and gentle kept a sparrow as a pet.



　あるひ、すずめ が おばあさん が つくった ノリ を、ツンツン と つついて たベて しまった の です。
　One day, the sparrow pecked up and ate all the seaweed that the old lady had been drying in the sun.

「この いたずら すずめ！」
"What an evil sparrow !"

　おこった おばあさん は すずめ を つかまえる と、なんと ハサミ で すずめ の した を きって しまいました。
　The old lady was so furious that she caught the bird, and cut off the sparrow's tongue in one go.

　チュッ、チュッ、チュッ！
　Cheep, cheep! Went the sparrow

　すずめ は なきながら、やぶ の なか へ にげて いきました。
　While crying, the sparrow escaped into the thicket.

　まもなく おじいさん が しごと から かえって きました が、すずめ の すがた が みえません。
　Presently, the old man returned from his work and was surprised to see that the sparrow was nowhere to be seen.

「おばあさん、わし の すずめ は どこ に いったかの？」
"Old lady, where did my sparrow get to?"

「ふん！　あの いたずら すずめ。わたし の ノリ を たべて しまった から、した を ハサミ で きって やったわ」
"Humph! That mischievous sparrow. Because that bird ate all my seaweed I cut off his tongue with my scissors."

「なんと、かわいそうに・・・」
"What?! Poor thing!..."

　こころ の やさしい おじいさん は、した を きられた すずめ の こと が しんぱい で なりません。
　The gentle old man became very concerned about the sparrow and tried to imagine how it would be feeling.

「だいじょうぶ だろうか？　ごはん は ちゃんと、たべて いる だろうか？　・・・よし、さがし に いこう」
"I wonder if the bird is ok?" Is the bird eating properly I wonder?? Then, I must search for the bird"

　おじいさん は すずめ の にげた やぶ に、すずめ を さがし に いきました。
　The old man, then set off in search of the bird in the direction of the thicket where it had flown away.

「おーい、おーい。すずめ や すずめ。したきり すずめ は、どこ に いる？」
"Hey, hey. .Sparrow, sparrow. Sparrow with it's tongue cut out, where are you?"

　すると やぶ の かげ から、チュンチュン と すずめ の なく こえ が します。
　Just then, from out of the bush came the sound of the sparrow.

「おじいさん、ここ ですよ。すずめ の いえ は ここ ですよ」
"Old man, I’m here. My house is over here."

　やぶ の なか から、すずめたち が おおぜい あらわれました。
　And whatsmore from among the bush came a flock of sparrows.

　みると、した を きられた すずめ も います。
　Upon looking, the old man could see the sparrow he loved so much.

「おおっ、すまなかったな。どれ、した は だいじょうぶか？　・・・ああっ、よかった。これなら だいじょうぶだ」
"Oh, I’m so sorry. How is your tongue? ...I'm so relieved to see you are alive. If that’s the case, then everything must be ok."

　すずめ の した を みて、おじいさん は ホッ と しました。
　After seeing the sparrows tongue ,he was somewhat relieved.

「ありがとう、おじいさん。さあさあ、わたしたち の いえ で やすんでいって くださいな」
"Thank you ,old man, for worrying. Now, now, come and take a rest in our house."

　すずめたち は、みんな で おじいさん を すずめ の いえ へ つれて いきました。
　So, all of the sparrows brought the old man to their house.

　そして みんな で すずめおどり を したり、おいしい ごちそう を たくさん だして くれました。
　The sparrows then proceeded to dance together and produced delicious treats for the old man to eat,

　おじいさん は、おおよろこび です。
　The old man was overjoyed with happiness.

「それでは くらく ならない うち に、おいとま を しよう。すずめさん たち、ありがとう」
"It is getting dark now, so I think I must be taking my leave. Sparrows, thank you"

　おじいさん が おれい を いって かえろう と すると、すずめたち は おおきな つづら と ちいさな つづら を もってきました。
　But when the old man tried to thank them and leave, a big sparrow and a small sparrow appeared with gifts

「おじいさん、おみやげ に どちら でも すきな ほう を もって いって くださいな」
"Old man, which of these gifts would you like to take home with you?"

　すずめたち が、いいました。
　Said the sparrows in unison.

「ありがとう。でも、わたし は この とおり おじいさん だから、あまり おおきな つづら は もつ こと が できない。
"Thank you , but as the path home is so tough for an old man like me, then I couldn’t possibly carry a big basket.

　ちいさい ほう を、いただく と しよう」
　So, I think I will just take the small basket."

　おじいさん は ちいさな つづら を おみやげ に もらう と、せなか に せおって かえって いきました。
　The old man then received the small basket of gifts and loaded them onto his back and set off home.

　そして いえ に かえって すずめ の おみやげ を あけて みると、
　When he got home he opened the basket, and what do you think he saw!

　なんと なか には おおばん こばん に ほうせき や サンゴ など の うつくしい たからもの が たくさん はいって いたのです。
　An amazing array of big coins and small coins, mixed with jewels and corals of all sorts.

　すずめたち は やさしい おじいさん に、みんな で おれい の おくりもの を したのです。
　The sparrows had shown their gratitude to the old man for his kindness by giving him wonderful gifts .

「まあ、まあ、まあ、なんて いい もの を もらったんでしょう。わたし も ほしいわ」
　"Well, well .You received some wonderful things! I would also like some too.” Said the old lady.

　すずめ の おみやげ を みて、おばあさん は うらやましくて なりません。
　Upon seeing such presents the old lady became incredibly jealous.

「どれ、わたし も いって、もらって こよう かね」
"Well, I think I will go out and get some for myself "

　おばあさん は、すずめ の いえ へ でかけて いきました。
　The old lady, then proceeded to leave the house and walked off to where the sparrow's house was.

　そして すずめ の いえ に、むりやり はいる と、
　When she arrived, she forced her way in.

「ごちそう も おどり も、いらないよ。すぐ に かえる から、はやく みやげ を もって くるんだよ」
"Neither entertainment nor dance is necessary. Since I will go home straight, just bring me the gifts."

「はい、では、おおきい つづら と ちいさい つづら・・・」
"Well, why, yes of course. Will it be the big sparrow or the small one? "

「おおきい つづら に、きまっている だろ！」
"It goes without saying,? the LARGE one!"

　おばあさん は おおきい つづら を うけとる と、いそい で いえ へ かえって いきました。
　As soon as the old lady had accepted the large sparrow's gift, she hurried off home .

「しかし、なんとも おもたい つづら だね。でも それだけ、おたから が たくさん はいって いる しょうこ だよ」
"But, how heavy this basket is. This surely must be proof that it contains riches."

　いえ まで もうすこし でした が、おばあさん は つづら の なか に どんな もの が はいって いる のか みたくて なりません。
　Although the old lady was presently very close to home she couldn’t constrain herself from peeping into the basket.

「どれ、なに が はいって いるか、みて みよう かね」
"What is inside, well, let's have a look shall we."

　おばあさん は みちばた で つづら を おろろす と、なか を あけて みました。
　The old lady, then took the basket down from her back and opened it up and looked inside.

「きっと、おおばん こばん が ザックザク だよ。・・・うん？　・・・ヒェー！」
"Surely, it will be filled with big and small coins jingling together . ... What? ... Aaaaaaaghhh! "

　なんと つづら の なか には、ムカデ に ハチ に ヘビ、そして おそろしい かお の おばけたち が たくさん はいって いた の です。
　But to her horror, the basket was filled with centipedes, bees and snakes, what’s more, terrifying ghosts faces were also in there, peering out at her.

「たっ、たすけて おくれー！」
"H h h help meee- "

　おばあさん は いちもくさん に、いえ へ にげかえり ました。
　At full speed, the old lady fled back to the house.

　そして おじいさん に、この こと を はなす と、
　When she told the old man about the whole thing, this is what he said.

「おばあさん、かわいい すずめ の した を きったり、よくばって おおきな つづら を もらったり したから、バチ が あたった の だよ。
"Since you cut out the tongue of that poor cute sparrow and in your greediness ,took the biggest basket you have received punishment from above.

　これから は、いきもの を かわいがって おやり。それから けっして、よくばらない よう に ね 」
　From now on be kind to all living things And try hard not to be greedy.

　おじいさん は おばあさん に、そう いいました。
　Said the old man to the old lady.
