　むかしむかし、たび の さむらい が ひとり、むらはずれ の さみしい のはら に さしかかりました。
　Once upon a time, there was a traveling samurai walking into a deserted grass field in the suburb of a villege.

　この あたり には、『しゅ の ばん』と よばれる ようかい が でる との うわさ です。
　There was a tumor that a monster called Shunoban lived around this area.

「ああ、ひ は くれてくるし、こころぼそい なあ。ばけもの に あわねば よいが」
“Oh, the sun is setting. I feel lonely. I hope I won’t run into a monster.”

　さむらい が あし を はやめる と、
　When the samurai hurried his steps,

「しばらく、おまち くださらんか」
“Could you wait up for me?”

と、うしろ から、よびとめる もの が います。
　somebody called from behind.

　さむらい が おそるおそる ふりかえる と、そこ に いたのは じぶん と おなじ ような たび の さむらい でした。
　When the samurai carefully looked back, there was a samurai who was traveling like himself.

　あみがさ を かぶって いる ので かお は わかりません が、さむらい に まちがい ありません。
　It was hard to recognize his face because he was wearing a hat made of braided straw but he definitely looked like a samurai.

「さしつかえ なければ、ごいっしょ ねがいたい のですが」
“If you don’t mind, could I go with you?”

「そうですか。じつ は わし も みちづれ が ほしかった のです。
“Sure. In fact, I wanted a company myself too.”

　この あたり には『しゅ の ばん』 とか いう ばけもの が でる との うわさ ですから。・・・きいた こと が ありませんか？」
　Rumor has it that there is a monster called Shunoban around here. Haven’t you ever heard of it?”

　すると、あと から きた さむらい が、
　Then the other samurai said,

「ああ、きいた こと が ありますよ。
“Yes, I’ve heard of it.

　なんでも それは、こんな ばけもの だそうで」
　I heard it’s a monster like this.”

と、いって、かぶっていた あみがさ を、パッ と とりました。
　Then he suddenly took off his hat.

　すると そこから あらわれた のは、ごばん の ように かくばって いる、しゅ に そまった、まっかな かお で、
　What appeared there was a red square face

　かみのけ は まるで はりがね の ように ごつごつ しており、おおきな くち は みみ まで さけています。
　and the hair was wiry and the big mouth was slashed to its ears.

　そして ひたい には、つの が はえて いました。
　And there was a horn growing from its forehead.

　これは まさしく、しゅ の ばん の ばけもの です。
　This is the Shunoban monster for sure.

　さむらい は、
　The samurai said,

「うーん！」
“Mmm…”

と、め を まわして、きぜつ してしまいました。
and then he passed out.

　そして しばらく してから、はっ と われ に かえった さむらい は、むがむちゅう で のはら を かけぬけて いき、
　Later on, the samurai came to senses and ran feverishly through the grass field

　やがて みえてきた いえ に とびこみました。
　and he found a house and rushed in there.

「おたのみ もうします！」
“Hello?”

　すると その いえ には、おかみさん が ひとり いるだけでした。
　There was only a housewife in the house.

「まあまあ、いかがなされた の ですか？」
“Well, what’s the matter?”

「まず は みず を いっぱい、のませて いただきたい」
“Could I have a glass of water?”

「はい、ただいま さしあげますよ」
“Sure. I’ll get you right away.”

　おかみさん は だいどころ の みずがめ の ひしゃく を とって、さむらい に わたしました。
　The housewife took a ladle out of the water jar in the kitchen and handed it to the samurai.

　いっき に それ を のんだ さむらい は、おかみさん に はなしました。
　The samurai drank down the water and told the housewife what happened to him,

「じつ は、のはら で みちづれ が できた と おもったら、しゅ の ばん の ばけもの だったのです」
“I thought I got a company in the grass field but it turned out to be Shunoban monster.”

「おや、それは おそろしい もの に あいましたね。
“Oh, dear. What a horrible monster you met.

　しゅ の ばん に あうと、たましい を ぬかれる と いいますから。
　It is said that if you met Shunoban, your soul might be taken.

　・・・して、その しゅ の ばん と いう のは、もしや、こんな かお では ありません でしたか？」
　By any chance, did Shunoban look like this?”

　おかみさん は、ひょいっ と かお を あげました。
　The housewife suddenly raised her head.

　そこに あった のは、しゅ に そまった しかくい かお に、みみ まで さけた くち に、はりがね の ような かみのけ に、ひたい の つの です。
　What appeared there was a red square face with the mouth slashed to the ears, wiry hair, and a horn from the forehead.

「うーん！」
“Mmm…”

　さむらい は、またまた きぜつ してしまい、つぎ の ひ に なって われ に かえりましたが、
　The samurai passed out again and came to his senses the next day,

　しゅ の ばん に たましい を ぬかれた のか、みっかご に しんで しまった と いうことです。
but unfortunately, he was said to be dead probably because his soul was taken by Shunoban.
