「オオカミ と やまいぬ の ちがい が わからない が、なんとか、わかる ほうほう は ない もの だろうか」
“I don’t know the difference between a wolf and a wild dog. I wonder if there’s a way to tell them apart,”

　ひとり が いう と、もう ひとり の おとこ が、
　said a man. So the other man said,

「おや、おまえ は、その ちがい が わからん のか？」
“Why, you don’t know the difference?”

「ああ」
“No.”

「それじゃあ、おれ が おしえてやる。
“Let me tell you, then.

　まず、オオカミ らしい やつ が でたら、ぼう で なぐって みると よい。
　First of all, when you find one that looks like a wolf, hit it with a stick.

　やまいぬ は おくびょう だから にげていくし、
　If it’s a wild dog, it’ll run away for it is a coward.

　オオカミ なら、おまえ の のど に くいついてくる」
　If it’s a wolf, it’ll bite into your throat.”
