　わかい おとこ が ふたり で あるいて いると、みち の うえ に てがみ が おちていました。
　One day two young men were walking together and they found a letter on their way.

　ひとり の おとこ が それ を みつけて、
　A man said,”

「これは、ちりがみ の かわり に ちょうどよい」
“Well well, I can use this for a tissue.”

と、ひろって、ふところ に 入れようと すると、となり に いた もう ひとり の おとこ が、
　As he picked it up and put it into his pocket, the other young man said,

「たのむ。その てがみ を、おれ に くれ」
“Do me a favor, can I have that letter?”

「ああ、いいが、いったい こんな もの、なに に するのだ？」
“Sure, but what are you going to do with it?”

と、ひろった おとこ が きく と、
　asked the young man with the letter. And the other young man answered,

「しばらく いなか へ てがみ を やっていない ので、それ を もらって かわり に だす のさ」
“Well, I haven’t written to my family for a while. I thought it could be a substitute for my letter.”

「しかし、たにん の てがみ だぞ。そんなん で だいじょうぶか？」
“But this is someone else’s letter! Are you sure?”

「なに、しんぱい するな。どうせ いなか の にんげん は、だれ も じ が よめないんだから」
“I am. Don’t worry no one in my hometown will be able to read it anyway.”
