A Quarrel Between a Hand and a Foot

　ある ひ、て と あし が けんか を しました。
　One day, a hand and a foot had a quarrel.

「おまえ は、すぐ ひざ の うえ に のる。まったく、うっとうしい やつ だ」
“You always try to sit on the lap. You are quite annoying,” the foot said.

と、あし が いうと、て は、
　So the hand said,

「なにを いっているんだ。きょうだい で いえば おれ が うえ に あるから、て は にいさん だぞ。
“What are you talking about? Since I am located above you, I’m like your big brother.

　おれ が いなければ、しごと も できない くせに」
　You can’t do your job without hands.”

「ふん、あし が なくては、しごと に いく こと が できまい」
“Nonsense. Without feet, you can’t even go to work,” the foot talked back.

　まけず に あし が いう と、て は、
　Then the hand said,

「そう いう なら、たべもの は て で たべるんだぞ。
“If you say so, I must tell you that food is eaten with hands.

　あし では、くち へ もって いけまい」
　Feet cannot take food to mouth, can they?”

　あし も、これには いいかえせず、
　Not being able to talk back, the foot said,

「・・・それは、おまえ の いうとおり だ。
“… You are right about that.

　だが、おぼえて おけ。
　But remember.

　こんど イヌ の うんち を ふんづけて、おまえ に ふかせて やる からな」
　Next time I’ll step on dog poop and make you wipe it off!”

　「ひぇーっ、それだけ は、ごかんべん を」
　“Oh no, please don’t make me do that!”
