　むかし むかし、えど に、おかだやはちろう と いう さむらい が すんで いました。
　A long time ago, there lived a samurai called Yahachiro Okada in Edo.

　やはちろう には、ただ ひとり の むすめ が いて、その な を しず と いいます。
　Yahachiro had a daughter and her name was Shizu.

　しず は あさがお の はな が だいすき で、じゅうよんさい の とき に あさがお の つぼみ を みつけて、こんな うた を つくりました。
　Shizu loved the morning glory. When she was fourteen, she found seeds of morning glory and made a song like this.

♪いかならん
♪ What color

♪いろ に さく かと
　will it be.

♪あくる よる を
　It is waiting for the day to be dawned

♪まつ の とぼそ の
　at the door.

♪あさがお の はな
　The flower of morning glory.

　ちち は この うた を たんざく に かいて、つま に みせました。
　Yahachiro wrote this song on a card and showed it to his wife.

「あの ちいさな むね に、どんな いろ に はな が さく で あろう と、つぎ の あさ を まつ こころ じゃ」
“She has a heart of waiting for the next morning what color of the flower will bloom.”

「はい、まこと すなお に、うたわれて おります」
“Yes, she made this song just like it came up to her mind.”

　ところ が むすめ の しず は、この とし の ふゆ に かぜ を こじらせて、そのまま しんで しまった の です。
　However, Shizu had passed away for the bad flu in that winter.

　のこされた ちち と はは は、とても かなしみ ました。
　The father and mother were grieved so much.



　さて、なつ も ちかい あるひ の こと。
　In the meantime, one day near summer,

　はは が なにげなく むすめ の てばこ を あけて みると、なか には ちいさな かみづつみ が いくつ も はいって いました。
　When the mother casually opened the daughter’s case, she found many paper packages inside.

　そして どの つつみ にも ほそい きれい な じ で、
　All the packages had

　ももいろ、そらいろ、しぼり(あおいろのいっしゅ) など と、いろ の な が かきしるされて いました。
　name of colors such as pink, sky-blue, or Shibori(one of blue) in thin and beautiful handwriting.

　いっしょく ずつ かみ に ていねい に つつんだ、その いろ の あさがお の タネ です。
　They were seeds of the morning glory carefully wrapped in a paper by the color.

(ああ、むすめ は この タネ を まいて、それぞれ の いろ の うつくしい はな の さく のを、どれほど みたかった こと でしょう)
“Oh, how much she wanted to sow these seeds and see the flowers to bloom with its beautiful colors. ”

　そう おもう と はは は たまらなく、せつなく なりました。
　As the mother thought, she couldn’t bear any longer.

「そうだわ。せめて この タネ を まいて、むすめ を とむらい ましょう」
“Well, at least I should sow these seeds and mourn for my daughter.”

　はは は にわ に、その あさがお の タネ を まきました。
　She sowed seeds of the morning glory in the garden.

　ひ が たって つる が のび、やがて つぼみ が つきました。
　As the days went by, vines grew and soon buds appeared.

　 ある なつ の あさ、やはちろう を しごと に おくりだした はは は、ふと にわ の あさがお を みました。
　One summer morning, when she saw off Yahachiro to go to his work, she looked at the morning glory in the garden.

　すると うつくしい いちりん の はな が パッ と さいて いて、その はな の そば に むすめ の しず が たって いる では ありませんか。
　She found one beautiful flower bloomed and her daughter Shizu was standing beside the flower.

「おおっ、しず、しず かい？」
“Oh, Shizu. Are you Shizu?”

　はは が おもわず こえ を かける と、むすめ は うれしそう に ニッコリ ほほえみ、そして ちいさな こえ で、
　When the mother talked the daughter, she smiled happily and said in a small voice,.

「おはな を ありがとう」
“Thank you for the flowers.”

と、いって、そのまま スーッ と きえて しまいました。
　and she disappeared quietly.

　ゆうがた に なって ちち の やはちろう が かえって きた とき、
　When Yahachiro came home in the evening,

　ゆうがた には しぼむ はず の あさがお は、まだ うつくしい いろ で さいて いた と いう こと です。
　the flower kept bloomed in a beautiful color even though the morning glory should fade in the evening.
