　むかしむかし、ある ところ に、ちいさな おんなのこ が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a little girl.

　おとうさん も おかあさん も しんで しまって、おんなのこ の もっている もの は きている ふく と、しんせつ な ひと が くれた ひときれ の パン だけ です。
　Since both her father and mother just passed away, what she had were only the clothes she was wearing and a slice of bread a kind stranger gave her.

　たよる ひと の いない おんなのこ は、かみさま だけ を たより に のはら へ でて いきました。
　As she didn’t have anybody but God she could rely on, she made her way to a field.

　すると、まずしい おとこのひと が やって きて いい ました。
　Then, a poor man came to her and said.

「おねがい だ。わたし に なに か たべるもの を おくれ、もう、はらぺこ なんだ」
“Please give me something to eat. I’m starving.”

　たべるもの と いって も、おんな の こ には ひときれ の パン しか ありません。
　However, she had only a slice of bread.

　この パン を あげて しまったら、おんなのこ の たべるもの が なくなって しまいます。
　She knew that if she gave it to the man, she wouldn’t have anything else to eat herself.

　でも おんなのこ は、もって いた パン を ぜんぶ あげて いい ました。
　But she kindly offered this bread to the man and said.

「かみさま の おめぐみ が、あります ように」
“God bless you.”

　そして さき へ あるいて いく と、ひとり の こども が やって きて なきながら いい ました。
　And when she went further, a crying child came up to her and said.

「さむい、あたま が さむいよう。ねえ、なにか かぶる もの を ちょうだい」
“Cold! My head is cold! Please give me something to put on my head.

　そこで おんなのこ は、じぶん の ボウシ を あげて いい ました。
　Then the girl handed her hat to the child and said.

「かみさま の おめぐみ が、あります ように」
“God bless you.”

　また しばらく いく と、こんど は うわぎ が なくて こごえて いる こども に あいました。
　As she kept on going, there was a child who was shivering without any coat on.

　おんなのこ は じぶん の うわぎ を ぬぐ と、その こども に あげて いい ました。
　While taking off her coat and giving it to the child, the girl said,

「かみさま の おめぐみ が、あります ように」
“God bless you.”

　また さき へ あるいて いく と べつ の こ が スカート を ほしがる ので、スカート を あげて いい ました。
　As she went a lot further, she gave her skirt to another little girl who begged her for it and said,

「かみさま の おめぐみ が、あります ように」
“God bless you.”

　とうとう おんなのこ は、もり に やってきました。
　Finally, she arrived in the forest.

　あたり は もう、すっかり くらく なって います。
　It had already got dark out there.

　そこへ また ひとり の こども が やって きて、したぎ を ほしがり ました。
　There was another child approached her and begged for her underwear.

　したぎ を あげる と、おんなのこ は はだか に なって しまいます。
　If she had given her underwear, she would be naked.

　おんなのこ は、すこし まよい ました が、
　For that reason, she hesitated for a moment but she thought to herself,

（くらい よる だから、だれ にも みえや しないわ）
“It’s so dark that nobody can see me naked.”

　おんなのこ は こう かんがえて したぎ を ぬぐ と、とうとう これ も あげて いい ました。
　Then she ended up taking off her underwear and giving it to the child and said,

「かみさま の おめぐみ が、あります ように」
“God bless you.”

　こうして おんなのこ が なにひとつ み に つけず に たって いると、とつぜん そら から ほし が おちて きました。
　The standing girl, wearing nothing on, found some stars floating down from the sky.

　そして その ほし は、ピカピカ ひかる きんか に なったのです。
　Later, those stars turned into sparkling gold coins.

　き が つくと はだか だった はず の おんなのこ は、いつ の ま にか りっぱ な ふく を きて いました。
　She must have naked, but she actually found herself in fancy clothes.

「ああ、かみさま ありがとう」
“Oh, God! Thank you.”

　おんなのこ は きんか を ひろい あつめる と、その おかね で いっしょう しあわせ に くらした と いう ことです。
　She lived happily ever after with the coins she picked up.
