　むかしむかし、イタリア の アトリ と いう まち の おはなし です。
　Once upon a time, there was a town called Atri in Italy.


　あるひ、おうさま の めいれい で、まち の ひろば の とう に おおきな かね が つるされました。
　One day, a big bell was hung from a tower at the town square by the order of the King.

　かね から は、ながい つな が さがっています。
　And there was a long rope hanging from the bell.

「どんな おと が する の だろう？」
“What does it sound like?”

　まち の ひとたち は とう を とりかこん で、むね を わくわく させながら おうさま が くる のを まちました。
　The townspeople, filled with joyful expectations, surrounded the tower and waited for the arrival of the King.

　やがて ばしゃ で やって きた おうさま が、あつまった ひとびと に こう いい ました。
　Before long, the King arrived in a carriage and said to the crowd.

「この かね は、ただ じこく を しらせたり、おと を きく だけ の もの では ない。『ただしさ の かね』と して、ここ に つるした のじゃ」
“This bell was hung as ‘the Bell of Justice’, not only to tell the hour or let you enjoy its sound.

「ただしさ の かね？」
“The Bell of Justice?”

　ひとびと は、ふしぎ そう に おうさま を みつめました。
　People wonderingly stared at the King.

「そうじゃ、『ただしさ の かね』じゃ。
“That’s right. It’s the Bell of Justice.

　おまえたち の うち の だれ でも、もし ひと に いじめられたり、つらいめ に あわされたり したら、ここ へ きて かね を ならせば よい。
　If someone bullied you or went hard on you, you may want to come here and ring this bell.

　かね が なれば さいばんかん が すぐ に きて、おまえたち の いいぶん を きいて くれる。
　When the bell was rung, a judge will come at once and listen to you.

　そして なに が ただしいか を、きめて くれる で あろう」
　Then, he will tell you what is right.”

「だれ が かね を ならして も、よろしい の ですか？」
“So, anyone can ring the bell?”

「だれ が ならして も よい。
“Yes, anyone can ring the bell.

　こども でも よいぞ。
　Even a kid can ring the bell.

　みよ、その ため に つな は、この よう に ながく して あるのじゃ」
　Look! That’s why this hanging rope is long enough.”

　こうして アトリ の まち では、その ひ から ひと に つらいめ に あわされた ひと や、あらそいごと の ある ひと は とう の した に きて、かね を ならす よう に なりました。
　Since that day, people being given a hard time or involved in a fight had come to the tower and rung the bell in Atri.

　そして おうさま の おっしゃった とおり かね が なる と さいばんかん が やってきて、だれ が ただしい か、なに が しんじつ か を きめて くれる の です。
　As the King said, a judge showed up when the bell was rung to tell who was right or what was the truth.

　かね の おかげ で まち の みんな は、たのしく まいにち を すごせる よう に なりました。
　The bell enabled the townspeople to enjoy their daily lives.

　そして ながい ねんげつ の あいだ に おおぜい の ひと が つな を ひっぱった ので、つな が きれて あたらしい つな が できる まで ブドウ の つる が さげられる こと に なりました。
　After so many people pulled the rope over the years, the rope snapped and a grapevine was replaced until a new rope was provided.


　さて、アトリ の まちはずれ に、ひとり の かねもち の おとこ が すんで いました。
　Meanwhile, there lived a rich man lived outside of Atri.

　この おとこ は わかい ころ は ウマ に のって わるもの を たくさん やっつけた、いさましく ただしい ひと で した。
　He used to be a brave man with a strong sense of justice and would beat up bad people on a horse when he was young.

　でも とし を とる に したがって、だんだん と いじわる の けちんぼう に なって しまったのです。
　But as he got older, he was turning into a mean and stingy guy.


　ある ひ、かねもち は かんがえ ました。
　One day, the rich man thought,

「もっと、おかね を ためる ほうほう は ない だろうか？
“Isn’t there any way to save more money?

　・・・そうだ。ウマ に エサ を やらなければ いいんだ」
　I know! Maybe I shouldn’t feed my horse.”

　こうして むかし は いっしょ に かつやく した ウマ なのに、エサ を やる の を やめて しまった の です。
　Thus, he stopped feeding his horse which fought together with him in the old days.

　やせほそった ウマ は ヨロヨロ しながら、やっと アトリ の まち へ たどり つきました。
　As a result, the meager horse stumbled to Atri.

　そして ひろば の とう の した まで くると、つな の かわり に さがって いた ブドウ の つる の は を ムシャムシャ たべはじめた の です。
　When he reached under the tower at the square, he started to munch the grapevine hanging from the bell instead of a rope.

　♪ガラン、ガラン。
　“Ding-Dong”

　ウマ が たべる たび に、かね が ガランガラン と なりました。
　Whenever the horse bit into the grapevine, the sound of the bell going 'ding dong’ was heard.

　まち の ひとたち も さいばんかん も ひろば に とんできて、その ウマ を みました。
　The townspeople and a judge rushed to the square and watched the horse.

「かわいそうに、こんな に やせている」
“Oh, poor horse. What made him so meager like this?”

「ウマ は くち が きけない から、かね を ならして、つらい こと を うったえて いるのだ」
“Since horses like him can’t talk, he must be trying to tell us he’s having a hard time by ringing the bell.”

　すぐ に かいぬし だった かねもち が、ひろば に よばれ ました。
　A short time later, the owner of the horse was summoned to the square.

　さいばんかん は、かねもち に いい ました。
　The judge said to the rich man,

「この ウマ は、いままで とても あなた の やく に たって きた はず。
“This horse should have served you faithfully for a long time.

　あなた の ためた おかね の はんぶん は、この ウマ の もの では ありませんか？」
　Shouldn’t half of the money you saved go to this horse?”

　かねもち の おとこのひと は ブドウ の は を たべている ウマ を みている うち に、むね が いっぱい に なりました。
　The rich man got choked up by seeing the horse munching the grapevine.

　じぶん が どんな に ひどいこと を したか、ようやく わかった の です。
　He finally realized what he had done to the horse.

　そして それから は ウマ を たいせつ に して、いつまで も なかよく くらし ました。
　Since then, he took good care of the horse and they both lived happily ever after.

　アトリ の かね は、ウマ に とっても 『ただしさ の かね』だった の です。
　The bell of Atri surely was ‘the Bell of Justice’ for the horse as well as many people.
