　むかしむかし、ある いえ の テーブル の うえ に、にほん の ロウソク が おかれて いました。
　Once upon a time, there were two candles on the table at a house.

　いっぽん は みつろう と いって、とても こうか で じょうとう な ロウソク でした。
　One of the candles was made from beeswax, which was very expensive but had superior quality.

　クルクル と ねじった ほそみ の デザイン が、とっても おしゃれ です。
　It was so slim and stylish with the twisted design.

　もう いっぽん は クジラ の あぶら から つくられた、やすもの の ロウソク でした。
　The other, on the other hand, was cheap, made from whale oil.

　じょうとう な ロウソク と ちがい、ただ まるめた だけ の おデブさん です。
　Compared to the superior one, it was just chubby with poor design.

　みつろう は、じまんげ に いい ました。
　The beeswax candle proudly said,

「ぼく は、ほか の ロウソク より も かっこよく て、しかも ずっと あかるく ひかるんだ。だから きっと、ぎん の ロウソクたて に おかれるよ」
“I’m better looking than any other candles and I can brighten the most. So I’ll be put in a silver candle stand.”

　みつろう の ことば に、やすもの の ロウソク が ためいき を つきました。
　Hearing that, the cheap candle sighed.

「いいなあ。ぼく も きみ みたい に、きゃくま で パーティー に くる ひとたち を てらして あげたいよ。でも、ぼく が いく ところ は、せいぜい だいどころ さ」
“I envy you. I wish I could brighten people in the living room for a party like you. But I guess I’ll be put somewhere in the kitchen.”

　その とき、この いえ の おくさま が やってきて、やすもの の ロウソク を て に とる と だいどころ に もっていきました。
　Then, a lady who lived in the house came to the cheap candle and took it to the kitchen.

(やっぱり)
“I knew it.”

　やすもの の ロウソク は、がっかり です。
　The cheap candle was disappointed.

　だいどころ には、カゴ を かかえた ちいさな おとこのこ が たって いました。
　In the kitchen, a boy with a basket was standing.

　その かご の なか には たくさん の ジャガイモ と、いくつか リンゴ が はいって います。
　There were some potatoes and apples in the basket.

　おくさま が、おとこのこ に いいました。
　The lady said to the boy,

「さあ、この ロウソク も もっていきなさい。あなた の おかあさん は よる おそく まで おしごと を なさる でしょうから、これ が やく に たちますよ」
“Here. Take this candle with you. Your mother will work late so this might be useful.”

　すると それ を きいた、この いえ の ちいさな おんなのこ が いいました。
　The lady’s little daughter heard this and said,

「あら、わたし だって よる おそく まで おきて いるわ。だって こんや は、ダンスパーティー が あるんですもの。わたし、おおきな あかい リボン を つけて もらうのよ」
“Well, I will stay up late too because I’m having a dance party tonight. I’ll get a big red bow on my hair.”

　やすもの の ロウソク は、おほしさま の ように きらきら と め を かがやかす おんなのこ を みて、
　The cheap candle looked at the girl with sparkling eyes like a star.

「わあ。なんて かわいいんだろう」
“Wow. What a pretty girl,”

と、おもいました。
　The cheap candle thought.

「でも、ぼく は もう にど と、この おんなのこ には あえない。みつろうくん は、きっと おんなのこ と ダンスパーティー を たのしむ の だろうけど、ぼく は まずしい いえ に もらわれていく の だから」
“But I’ll never be able to see her again. The beeswax candle sure will enjoy the dance party with this girl while I’ll be taken to the poor house.

　おとこのこ は カゴ に ロウソク を いれる と、みすぼらしい ちいさな いえ に かえりました。
　The boy put the candle into the basket and headed for his small and shabby house.

　この いえ の おとうさん は もう しんでしまって、おかあさん が ぬいもの を しながら さんにん の こども を そだてて いました。
　His father had already passed away and his mother was raising three kids, making a living by sewing.

　おとこのこ が、カゴ の ロウソク を おかあさん に さしだす と、
　The boy offered the basket with the candle in it to his mother.

「まあ、いい ロウソク を いただいて」
“Oh dear, what a great candle you’ve got,”

と、おかあさん は とても よろこんで、やすもの の ロウソク に ひ を つけました。
　she said gladly and lit the cheap candle.

　そのとき、この いえ の いちばん した の おんなのこ が はいって きました。
　Then, the youngest girl of the family came in.

　その こ は にこにこ しながら、おにいさん と おねえさん の ところ に いく と、
　The girl was smiling and came to her brother and sister.

「あのね、もんだい だよ。こんや の ごちそう は、なーんだ？　えへへ。それはね、あったかい ジャガイモ だよ」
“I have a question for you. Guess what’s for dinner. He-he. It’s warm potatoes!”

　おんなのこ は うれしくて たまらない と いうように、かわいい め を キラキラ と かがやかせ ました。
　The girl looked so happy with sparkling eyes.

　やすもの の ロウソク は、その おんなのこ を みて こう おもいました。
　The cheap candle looked at her and thought,

「ああ、さっき みた、おかねもち の おんなのこ と おなじ め だ。
“Oh, her eyes look the same as the ones of the rich girl.

　むこう は ごうか な パーティー で、こっち は ジャガイモ の ごちそう だけど、どっち の おんなのこ も おなじよう に しあわせ なんだなあ」
　That rich girl should be enjoying the lavish party by now while this girl is enjoying the potato dish. But both girls must be equally happy.”

　やがて、ばんごはん に なりました。
　Before long, dinner was ready.

「とても おいしい、ジャガイモ だね」
“These potatoes are so good, don’t you think?”

「それに、リンゴ まで あるんだよ」
“We can enjoy apples too.”

「かみさま、おめぐみ ありがとうございます」
“Thank you God for your blessings.”

　にぎやかな しょくじ が おわる と、こどもたち は ベッド に はいって、おかあさん から おやすみ の キス して もらいました。
　After the cheerful dinner time was over, the kids went to bed and their mother kissed them good night.

「ああ、たのしい よる だったなあ」
“Oh. What a fun night.”

　やすもの の ロウソク は、この かぞく と いっしょ に しあわせな じかん を すごせて、とても まんぞく でした。
　The cheap candle was so happy to have spent the fun time with this family.

「もう、みつろうくん が うらやましく ないや。
“I don’t envy the beeswax candle anymore.

　みんな それぞれ に こうふく が あって、じぶん が こうふく と かんじられれば、それ は こうふく な こと なんだ。
　Everyone feels happiness differently. If you feel happy, you ARE happy.

　だから ぼく は、ほんとう に こうふくだ。
　So I’m very happy myself too.

　・・・あっ、おかあさん が ぬいもの を はじめるぞ。
　Well, mom is going to start sewing.

　よーし、ぼく も がんばらなくちゃ」
　Ok, I’ll do my job too.”
