　たいよう が にし に かたむいた ある ゆうがた、あれの を いっぴき の オオカミ が さまよって いました。
　One day, when the sun was setting in the East, a wolf was wandering around the wilderness.

　じめん に その かげ が、ながく ながく うつって います。
　A long shadow of him was reflected on the ground.

　それ を みて オオカミ は、
　The wolf saw it and thought,

「こんなに おおきな からだ を した おれ が、ライオン を こわがる なんて。
I can’t believe I had been afraid of lions with a big body like this.

　この とおり、しんちょう が ３０メートル も あるんだから、おれだって、かんたん に ひゃくじゅう の おう に なれるさ」
　It looks like I’m 30 meter tall, I could be the king of beasts.”

　オオカミ が すっかり いいき に なっている ところ へ、おおきな ライオン が とびかかって きて、ガブリ と かみつき ました。
　While the wolf was getting confident about himself, a lion jumped on and bit him.

　オオカミ は かんがえ を かえて さけび ました。
　The wolf realized the fact and cried,

「うぬぼれ が み を ほろぼす とは、この こと だ」
“They say ‘vanity will kill you’ and it’s so true.”


　この オオカミ の よう に、じぶん の ちから を かしん する こと は ひじょう に きけん です。
　Like this wolf, being overconfident about your strength can be very dangerous.
