　むかしむかし、ある おてら の ゆかした に、タヌキ が すんで いました。
　A long time ago, there was a raccoon dog which was living under a temple.

　この タヌキ は あたまのけ が うすい こと から 『はげダヌキ』と よばれて いたのですが、
　Even though this raccoon dog was called “a bold raccoon dog” for his thin hair,

　なんと この はげダヌキ は ひとだすけ が だいすき なのです。
　this raccoon dog just loved to help people.



　ある とし の くれ の こと、はげダヌキ が おてら の ちかく の とうふや へ あぶらあげ を もらい に いく と、
　One day at year-end, the bold raccoon dog went to a tofu shop to receive a deep fried tofu,

　とうふや の しゅじん が ためいき を ついて いました。
　a master of the shop was uttering with a sigh.

「こまったな。こうも おかね が なくては、とうふ を つくる まめ も かえない」
“I’m in trouble. I am running out of money and I can’t afford to buy beans to make tofu.”

　これ を きいた はげダヌキ は、とうふや の しゅじん に いいました。
　As the raccoon dog heard the talk, he said to the master of the shop,

「しんぱい せず とも だいじょうぶ。
“You don’t have to worry about anything.

　いつも おいしい あぶらあげ を いただいている おんがえし に、おいら が なんとか しましょう」
　I will take care of your problem because you always give me a deep fried tofu.”

　そして はげダヌキ は、きんぴか の やかん に ばけて
　Then the raccoon dog took the shape of a glided kettle,

　じぶん を うる ように いった の です。
and told the master to sell the kettle.

　やかん は まもなく、とおりかかった かねもち の だんな に かいとられました。
　Soon after, the kettle was bought by a rich man who just passed by the shop.

「これ は よい かいもの を した。まったく すばらしい やかん だ。
“Well, it was a pretty good deal. Look at this beautiful kettle.

　もっと みがけば、もっと ひかる かも しれんぞ」
　If I polish this kettle more, it would shine more.”

　だんな は さっそく、やかん を みがき はじめました。
　The man immediately get started on polishing the kettle.

　やかん に ばけていた はげダヌキ は、くすぐったい やら いたい やら。
　It was sometime ticklish and sometime painful for raccoon dog who was actually the kettle.

　でも、ばれては いけない ので、じっと がまん している と、みがかれすぎて、
　However, of course the man shouldn’t know the kettle was a raccoon dog, he had to keep silent. After all, he was too polished

　ただでさえ うすい あたまのけ を ツルツル に されて しまいました。
　and his thin hair was all gone.

(ああっ、たいせつ な あたまのけ が・・・)
“Oh my goodness, my dear hair…”

　これいじょう みがかれては たまらない ので、
　Because he could not stand to be polished any longer,

　はげダヌキ は だんな が て を はなした すき に にげだして、
the raccoon dog ran away when the master left him alone

　おてら の ゆかした に かくれました。
　and hid himself under the temple.

「ああ、こんな ツルツル あたま では、はずかしくて どこにも いけない や。
“Poor me. It is too embarrassing to go out with this bold head.

　でも、とうふや に おんがえし が できて よかった、よかった」
　But the good thing was, I could repay the tofu shop master. That’s what I am happy about.”



　それから も はげダヌキ は ひとだすけ を つづけて、ひとびと に たいせつ に された と いうことです。
　Thereafter the bold raccoon dog helped people and people took care of him.
