　むかしむかし、ある まち に、いろじろ で きのよわい、しんべい と いう さむらい が いました。
　Once upon a time, there was a samurai named Shinbei who was pale and weak in a town.

　ゆみ も かたな も だめ で、なかま からは こしぬけ よばわり されていました。
　Since he was not good at archery or swordfight, he was called chicken by his fellow samurais.

　さて この まち に、もと は まちいちばん の ちょうじゃやしき だった の ですが、
　By the way, there was a mansion that had been the most expensive in the town

　いま は あれはてて ゆうれい が でる との うわさ の やしき が ありました。
　but it became run-down and rumor had it that it was haunted by ghosts.



　ある ひ、なかま の さむらいたち から、
　One day, his fellow samurais mocked,

「どんな に つよい さむらい でも、ひとばん と おれん と いうぞ。
“However strong a samurai is, they say they can’t spend a night there.

　おぬし なんか、もん を くぐる こと さえ も できまい。あはははははっ」
　I don’t think you can even go through the gate. Hahaha.”

と、ばか に された しんべい は、
　Shinbei said,

「そこまで いわれて は、なに が なん でも とまって やるわ！」
“If you say so, I’ll stay overnight, no matter what happens.”

と、いえ に かえって はらごしらえ を すると、おっかなびっくり ゆうれいやしき へ でかけて いきました。
　After he had dinner at home, he timidly went to the haunted mansion.

　くさ が ぼうぼう の にわ に はいっていく と、さっそく ひとだま が にし と ひがし から ひとつ ずつ、すすーっ と とんで きました。
　When he entered the weed-grown backyard, a human soul flew from both the west and east.

「うひゃーっ、ひとだま が ふたつ も！」
“Whoa! There are two human souls!”

　しんべい は にげだしたい のを がまん して、おそるおそる やしき に はいりました。
　Shinbei wanted to run away but he timidly kept going into the mansion.

　やがて、ろうそく の ひ が ひとゆれ した かと おもう と、
　The candle light waved and he heard

「うらめしやあ・・・」
“Curses on you.”

と、かみ の ながい おんな の ゆうれい が、ぎん の おかね の はいった はこ を だいて あらわれました。
　There was a female ghost with the long hair holding a box filled with silver coins.

「で、でたー！」
“The… the ghost!”

　しんべい が ふるえあがり ながら も なんとか こらえて いると、カギ を て に した おとこ の ゆうれい も あらわれ ました。
　While he was trembling with fear, another male ghost with a key in his hand showed up.

　だんじょ の ゆうれい が いっしょ に でてくる なんて、よほど の わけ が あるのでしょう。
　There must have been a reason for the male and female ghosts appearing together.

　しんべい が おもいきって、わけ を きいてみると、
　Shinbei daringly asked the reason.

「わたしたち ふたり は、この やしき で はたらいていた もの どうし です。
“Both of us used to work at this mansion.

　けっこん の やくそく を した の ですが、しゅじん が それ を ゆるして くれません」
　We wanted to marry but the owner of this mansion didn’t let us,”

と、おとこ の ゆうれい が かたり はじめました。
said the male ghost.

「そこで やしき の おかね を もちだして、よそ の まち へ にげて くらそう と したのですが、
“Then we took all the money in the mansion and started living in another town,

　しゅじん に みつかってしまい、ふたり とも きりころされて しまいました。
　but the owner found and killed both of us.

　そして べつべつ の ところ に うめられ、いま も そのまま なのです。
　Our bodies were buried in different places.

　わたしたち は その うらみ から、やしき の しゅじん に たたって やりました が、いまだ に じょうぶつ できません。
　Though we couldn’t forgive and haunted the owner, we still haven’t been able to rest in peace.

　どうか この おかね で おぼうさん を よんで、じょうぶつ させて ください」
　Please call the monk with this money to let us rest in peace.”

「・・・そうだったのか。わかった」
“Is that so? I see.”

　しんべい が ひきうける と、だんじょ の ゆうれい は ひとだま に なって、すーっ と でていきました。
　When Shinbei accepted their request, the two ghost transformed into human souls and left quietly.

　ざしき には ぎん の おかね が ずっしり はいった はこ と、その はこ の カギ が のこされています。
　There was a box filled with silver coins and a key to the box left in the room.



　あくるあさ、しんべい は ゆうれいやしき の できごと を てら の おしょうさん に つたえて、ふたり の くよう を して もらいました。
　Next morning, Shinbei told a monk all about what happened at the mansion and he held a memorial service for the two.

　この はなし を きいた、この くに の とのさま は、
　The lord of this country heard this story and said,

「こしぬけ どころか、しんべい の はたらき は さむらい の かがみ で あるぞ。ほめてとらす」
“You’re far from chicken and a role model for other samurais. What you did is praiseworthy.”

　と、ほうび と して、その やしき を あたえた そうです。
　So he rewarded Shinbei with the mansion.
