　むかしむかし、あるところ に、なか の よい おじいさん と おばあさん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a loving couple of an old man and old woman.

　ふたり は、あるばん、
　One night, he said to her,

「なあ、ばあさん や。どちらか が さき に しんだら、おはか には いれない で いえ の かべ に ぬりこめよう。
“Hey, honey. When either of us die, the other should rub the dead body into the wall of the house, not put into a grave.

　そうすれば、いつまでも いっしょ に いられる」
　Then we’ll stay together for good.”

「そうですね。そして しんだ もの が、かべ の なか から よんだら、かならず へんじ を すること に しましょう」
“Good idea. And if you heard the dead calling your name, be sure to respond to it,”

と、やくそく しました。
they promised.

　ところ が まもなく、おばあさん が ポックリ あのよ へ いってしまった ので、
　Before long, however, the old woman suddenly passed away,

　おじいさん は やくそくどおり、おばあさん の なきがら を かべ に ぬりこめた のです。
and the old man rubbed the old woman’s body into the wall as he promised.

　すると、そのひ から まちにち、
　Ever since then,

「おじいさん、いるかい？」
“Darling, are you there?”

　かべ の なか の おばあさん が きいてきます。
the dead old woman had talked to him from the wall.

「ああ、ここにいるよ」
“Yeah, I’m here.”

「なに を しているんだい？」
“What are you doing?”

「わらしごと だよ」
“I’m doing some straw work.”.

　また しばらく すると、おばあさん が ききます。
　Later on, the old woman talked him again,

「おじいさん、いるかい？　なに を しているんだい？」
“Darling, are you there? What are you doing?”

　いちにち に なんど も きかれる ので、おじいさん は だんだん めんどうくさく なって きました。
　The old man gradually felt annoyed because she asked the same thing over and over again in a day.

「だれか、わし に かわって へんじ を してくれる もの は おらんかなあ？」
“Is there anybody who can respond to her on my behalf?”

　おじいさん が ためいき を ついて いると、うまい ぐあい に たび の おとこ が やってきました。
　Fortunately, a traveler came over while the old man was giving a sigh.

「すみません。たび の もの です。よければ ひとばん、とめて いただけませんか？」
“Excuse me. I’m a traveler, but could you please let me stay overnight here?”

　それ を きいた おじいさん は、おおよろこび で いいました。
　On hearing it, the old man was greatly pleased and said,

「どうぞどうぞ。えんりょなく とまっていってくれ。
“I’d love to. Feel free to stay here.

　その かわり かべ の なか から、『おじいさん、いるかい？』と、こえ が したら、『ああ、ここ に いるよ』と、こたえて くれんか。
　Instead, can you say ‘yeah, I’m here’ if you hear the woman from the wall saying ‘darling, are you there?’

『なに を しているんだい？』と、きかれたら、てきとう に こたえて くれりゃあいい」
　If she asks ‘what are you doing?’ you just can make it up.”

「はい。そんな こと なら、おやすいごよう ですよ」
“Ok. You can count on me on that.”

　たび の おとこ が ひきうけて くれたの で、おじいさん は やれやれ と、おさけ を のみ に でかけました。
　The old man felt relieved that the traveler took on the job and went out for a drink.

　るす を たのまれた おとこ は、かべ の なか の おばあさん の こえ に、いちいち こたえて いましたが、
　The man who was asked to stay home responded to the old woman’s voice every time he heard it.

　なんどとなく きかれる ので、やがて めんどう に なって つい、
　But she asked the same question repeatedly and he felt annoyed,

「うるせえなあ。おじいさん は さけ を のみ に でかけたよ」
“Shut up! The old man went out for a drink,”

と、ほんとう の こと を いって しまったのです。
he accidentally told the truth.

　すると とつぜん、ガバッ！ と、かべ が やぶれて、
　Then the wall suddenly got ripped.

　はんぶん が ガイコツ の、ものすごい かお の おばあさん の ゆうれい が とびだして きました。
and a half skeleton ghost of the old woman with a scary looking face popped out of it.

「おじいさん は、どこだーー！　おまえ は だれだーー！」
“Where is my darling? Who are you?”

「うひゃあー！　でっ、でたーー！」
“Eek!!!! G…ghost!!!!!

　おとこ は おどろいたの なんの、いのちからがら にげて いきました。
　The guy was so surprised that he barely escaped with his life.
