　むかしむかし、ある はる の ひ の こと。
　A long time ago, on one spring day,

　えど の ある いえ で あまよけ の いた が くさった ので、いた を とりかえる こと に しました。
　because a weatherboarding got rotten in one house in Edo, it was decided to be changed.

　さっそく だいく が くさった いた を はぎとって みると、
　Soon, a carpenter ripped off the board and took a look,

　なんと その した に からだ を くぎ に うたれた ヤモリ が いて、くるくるくるくる と まわって いた の です。
　he found a gecko stabbed with a nail and it was turning round and round under the board.

「やれやれ。せなか から はら まで、くぎ を うたれて おるわい」
“Oh my goodness. It is nailed from its back to belly.”

「これでは まわる ばかり で、にげられん」
“How can he escape without turning?”

　だいくたち が さわいでいる ところ へ、いえ の しゅじん も でてきて、
　When the carpenters were making a fuss, a master of the house came out,

「ははあ。これは きっと ごねんまえ、この いえ を なおした とき、くぎ を うたれた もの に ちがいない」
“Oh, I see, It must have been nailed when this house was repaired five years ago.”

と、いいました。
　he said.

　すると だいくたち は、
　The carpenters said,

「へーえ、それに しても ごねん もの ながい あいだ、どうして いきて おった もの かのう」
“Wow. How can it survive for five years?”

と、ふしぎがりました。
　They wondered.

　そこで だいく が しらべて みると、ちかく の かべ に ヤモリ が いきき した みち らしい ひとすじ の あと が ついて いた の です。
　So a carpenter studied around and he found a trail of another gecko on a nearby wall.

「そうか。この みち を とおって ごねん もの あいだ、なかま が たべもの を はこんで いた と いう わけか」
“I got it. His friend took this trail to bring something to eat for him.”

「なるほど」
“I see”

「こんな ヤモリ でも、じょう と いうもの は あるんじゃな」
“I’m surprised that even a gecko has a friendship.”

「ヤモリよ、おまえ も よい なかま を もった ものだ」
“Hey, gecko. You have such a good friend.”



　みんな は なかま を たすけた ヤモリたち に かんしん し、くぎ に うたれた ヤモリ を たすけて やった と いうことです。
　Everyone was impressed by a gecko that helped his friend and they saved the nailed gecko.
