　いま から さんびゃくねん ほど むかし、えど の よつやさもんちょう に、おいわ と いう いえがら の よい むすめ が いました。
　Once upon a time, about 300 years ago, there lived a girl from a rich girl named Oiwa in Edo Yotsuyasamoncho.

　ですが きのどく にも、ごさい の とき に ほうそう を わずらい、
　Unfortunately, she was attacked with smallpox when she was 5

　それは みにくい あばたがお に なってしまいました。
and her face became ugly and pockmarked.

　ちちおや は としごろ に なった むすめ を あわれ に おもって、ひとり の ろうにん を つれて きました。
　Her father felt pity for his teenage daughter and introduced her to a ronin.

　ながい びんぼうぐらし が いや に なった ろうにん は、ひどい かお の おいわ でも、むこ に なってもいい と いったのです。
　The ronin was tired of being poor so he said he would love to marry Oiwa even though she had an ugly face.

　むこ は ちちおや に よく つかえ、おいわ も たいせつ に しました。
　The husband was very faithful to his father-in-law and took good care of Oiwa as well.

　そして ちちおや が なくなって からも、まじめ に はたらきました。
　He worked hard even after her father died.

　おかげ で うわやく にも、たいへん すかれました。
　Therefore, he was very likable to men in the upper classes.

　なかでも とくに め を かけて、いえ へも よく まねいて くれる うわやく が ありました。
　Especially, there was the chief in the upper class who often invited the husband to his house.

　そして なんども いえ に まねかれる うちに、むこ は その やしき で はたらく じょちゅう を すき に なったのです。
　As the husband was invited to the house many times, he fell in love with a maid who worked in the house.

　じょちゅう の ほう も、まじめ で おとこらしい むこ を すき に なっていました。
　The maid also fell in love with the husband who was earnest and manly.

　だけど むこ は、もしも おいわ と わかれたら、もと の ろうにん に もどらなければ なりません。
　But if the husband separated from Oiwa, he would be demoted to a ronin again.

　こいしい おんな と いっしょ に なれない むこ は、みにくい かお の おいわ が いや で たまらなく なりました。
　The husband felt so stressed not to be able to stay with the woman he loved and he couldn’t bear to see Oiwa’s ugly face.

　そして そのうち に かざい を うりとばして は さけ を のみ、しごと も さぼる ように なってきたのです。
　Eventually, he sold some of the furniture to have a drink and he even didn’t go to work sometimes.

　こまった おいわ は、め を かけて くれた うわやく の ところ へ そうだん に いきました。
　Oiwa felt annoyed and went to talk to the chief who was friendly to her husband.

　ところ が むこ と じょちゅう の かんけい を しっていた うわやく は、
　But the chief knew the relationship between the husband and the maid

　かわいがっている むこ と じょちゅう を くっつけて やろう と おもい、おいわ に こう いった のです。
　and he wanted to hook up the husband and the maid so he said to her,

「いったん どこか に み を かくしていなさい。
“Hide yourself somewhere for a while.

　むこ に よく いいきかせて かいしん させた のち、きっと むかえ に やらせるから」
　I’ll go talk to your husband to change his mind and make him go pick you up.”

「はい。おたのみ もうします」
“Yes, please. Thank you.”

　おいわ は うわやく の ことば を ありがたく きいて、さっそく とおい ぶけやしき に じょちゅう と して でました。
　Oiwa listened to his words thankfully and soon went to a distant old samurai residence to work as a maid.

　それ を よろこんだ むこ は、
　The husband was so glad saying,

「おいわ は いえがら を すてて、どこか へ でていきおった」
“Oiwa left her house and went somewhere.”

と、いいふらし、どうどう と うわやく の じょちゅう と ふうふ に なったのです。
　Then he got married with the maid who served for the chief.

　ひとのよい おいわ は、むこ が むかえ に くる ひ を たのしみ に まっていました。
　The good-natured Oiwa was looking forward to the day when her husband was coming to pick her up.

　しかし、なんねん たっても むこ は むかえ に きてくれません。
　Many years had passed but her husband never came to pick her up.



　そんな あるひ の こと。
　One day,

　おいわ の いる やしき へ、いぜん、おいわ の いえ にも でいり していた、たばこうり が やって きました。
a tobacco vendor who used to come over to Oiwa’s place happened to come to the residence where Oiwa worked.

　たばこうり は おいわ に むこ の ようす を きかれて、いいにくそう に あたらしい おくがた とのこと を はなしました。
　When she asked him about her husband, the vendor had difficulty in telling her about her husband and his new wife.

　それ を きいた おいわ は、みるみる あおざめて、
　On hearing that, Oiwa got pale and said,

「うらめしや、よくも わたし を だましたね！」
“Curses on you. How could you cheat on me?”

と、すあし の まま とびだして いったのです。
　She rushed out of the residence with her bear feet.

　そして そのまま、ゆくえしれず に なって しまいました。
　And then she went missing.

　ところが それから と いうもの、むこ の まわり に つぎつぎ と きかいな こと が おこりました。
　Since then, however, some strange things had happened to the husband and around him.

　あたらしい つま と むこ が ねている と、おいわ の ゆうれい が やってきて、
　While he was sleeping, a ghost of Oiwa came to them

　うらめしそう に じっと みつめて いるのです。
　and stared at them like cursing on them.

　そして うまれた こども は きゅう に びょうき に なり、そのまま くるしんで しんでしまいました。
　And their baby suddenly became ill and then died a painful death.

　やがて あたらしい つま の うつくしい かお が、だんだん と みにくい おいわ の かお に なってきました。
　Also, the beautiful face of his new wife gradually became ugly that looked similar to Oiwa’s

　そして ついには、ふたり とも くるいじに したのです。
　At last, the two died in madness.

　また、おいわ を だました うわやく の かぞく も、おいわ に のろいころされて しまいました。
　On top of that, the chief who deceived Oiwa was killed by Oiwa’s curse.

　それ いらい、おいわ の いえ の あとに すむ ひと は、かならず げんいんふめい の びょうき で しんでしまう ので、
　Since then, people who lived in Oiwa’s house had died of unknown causes,

　たたり を おそれた ひとびと は、いえ の あと に おいなりさん を たてて、おいわ の くよう を しました。
　so people were so afraid of Oiwa’s curses that they built a Inari shrine to console her soul in the place where her house used to be.

　それ いらい、おいわ の たたり は なくなった と いうことです。
　It is said that Oiwa hasn’t cursed on anybody since then.
