　あるとき、ライオン が にんげん と いっしょ に たび を していました。
　One day a man and a line were traveling together.

　ライオン も ひと も、じぶん が えらい と おもっているので、
　Because they thought that they were superior to each other,

　みちみち じまんばなし ばかり していました。
　they were mostly bragging about their superiorities on the way.

　そのうち、みちばた に いし の ちょうこく が ある ところ に さしかかりました。
　In the meantime, they came across a stone statue on the roadside.

　その ちょうこく は、にんげん が ライオン を しめころしている すがた を あらわして いました。
　The statue represented a man strangling a lion.

　にんげん は すっかり とくい に なって、ライオン に いいました。
　The man boastfully said to the line,

「それ ごらん、この とおり。
”You see? That's the way it is.

　やっぱり にんげん の ほう が、あんたたち ライオン より つよいよ」
　We are stronger than you lions after all.”

　すると ライオン は、ニヤニヤ わらいながら こたえました。
　 Then the lion replied with a sarcastic smirk,

「なあに、もし ライオン が ちょうこくか に なれば、
”Well, if we lions become sculptors,

　にんげん が ライオン に ふみつけられている ちょうこく が たくさん みられる だろうよ。
　there will be lots of statues representing men trampled down by us.

　それに、ライオン と にんげん の どちら が つよいか なんて、わかりきっているよ。
　And to top it off, which is stronger, men and lions? I bet you already know it.

　なんなら、いま、この ば で ためして やろうか？」
　Do you want me to prove it here now?”

「・・・」
“……”



　くちさき だけ で、じぶん は ゆうかん だとか、つよい とか、おおい に じまん する けれど、
　Regardless of bragging about their bravery and strengths,

　いざ じっさい に ためされる と、ばけのかわ が はがれて ちいさく なってしまう ひと が よのなか には たくさん います。
　there are so many people in the world who become intimidated in the face of having to prove what they have said.
