　ある ひと が ロバ を かおう と して、ためし に いっぴき を えらんで いえ へ つれかえり、
　A man wanted to buy a donkey and took one home as a trial.

　じぶん の ロバたち の いる ところ へと ひっぱって いきました。
　He pulled the donkey over to where his other donkeys were.

　すると その ロバ は、ほか の ロバ には みむきも しないで、
　The donkey paid no attention to other donkeys

　いちばん なまけもの で おおぐい の ロバ の そば へ いきました。
　but approached the one that was the laziest and the biggest eater.

　そして いちばん なまけもの で おおぐい の ロバ と いっしょ に、なんにも しないで、じっと しています。
　And the donkey didn’t do anything but sat still with the one that was the laziest and the biggest eater.

　かいて は つれてきた ロバ を、もと の かいぬし の ところ へ つれもどしました。
　The man returned the donkey he brought home to the owner.

「この ロバ は だめ だから、かえすよ」
“I’ll return this donkey as it is no good.”

「えっ？　なぜ、そんな に かんたん に、だめ だと わかった の ですか？」
“What? How could you tell so quickly that it was no good?”

「これ いじょう、テスト する ひつよう は ありませんよ。
“There’s no need to test any more.

　たくさん の ロバ の なか から、あいつ が なかよし に えらんだ やつ と、おなじ せいかく に きまって います から」
　It’s most likely that the donkey has the same personality as the one it chose to be friends with.”


　たにん が わたしたち を はんだん する とき、いつも いっしょ に いる なかま と にたものどうし なのだろう と かんがえるものです。
　When others judge us, they tend to assume that we have the same type of personalities as the people we always hang out with.

　ですから、わるい ひと と つきあう のは やめましょう。
　That’s why we’d better not hang out with bad people.
