　せんそうのあいだ、へいたいはじぶんのうまにむぎをたっぷりたべさせました。
　During the war, soldiers fed their horse plenty of wheat.

　つらいこともあぷないこともいっしょにきりぬけてたたかってくれるうまだから、だいじにしていたのです。
　They took good care of them because they got through all the hard and dangerous things with them.

　しかしせんそうがおわると、
　But after the war,

　うまはつまらないしごとにつかわれたりおもいにもつをはこばされるだけで、エサもむぎワラしかもらえなくなりました。
　the horses ware forced to do a boring task or carry heavy stuff and the soldiers fed them only straw.

　そのうちに、またせんそうがはじまりました。
　Then after a while, a war began again.

　へいたいをあつめるラッパがなりひびくと、
　When the sound of trumpet was heard to gather the soldiers,

　しゅじんはうまにくらをつけ、ぶきをもってせんじょうにいくためにうまにまたがりました。
　a man saddled his horse and got onto the horse to go to the war with his weapons.

　ところがうまはすっかりよわっていて、ひとあしあるくたびにころんでしまうのです。
　However, the horse got so weak that it could hardly walk.

　うまは、しゅじんにいいました。
　The horse said to the man

「あなた、こんどはきへいでなしに、ほへいになってください。
“You should quit cavalry join an infantry unit.

　わたしは、むかしはりっぱなうまだったけれど、あなたのおかげでロバになってしまいました。
　I used to be a good horse but now I’m a donkey which is your fault.

　またせんそうになったからといって、いったんロバになったものがうまにもどれはしませんよ」
　A war broke out doesn’t mean I can turn to be a horse again.



　のどかでへいわなときにも、きびしくてつらいひのことをわすれてはなりません。
　You shouldn’t forget tough and hard days you spent even when it’s peaceful.
