　き の ちいさい としとった ちちおや に、ひとりむすこ が いました。
　A timid old father had an only son.

　むすこ は たいそう ゆうかん で、りょう が だいすき でした。
　The son was very much brave and loved hunting.

　あるとき、ちちおや は むすこ が ライオン の つめ で ひきさかれて しぬ ゆめ を みました。
　One day, the father dreamed of his son killed by tearing off with a lion’s nails.

「もし この ゆめ が まさゆめ で、ほんとう に こうなったら たいへんだ」
“It must be horrible if this was a prophetic dream and came true.”

と、しんぱいした ちちおや は、たかい ところ に りっぱな へや を つくって、むすこ を とじこめました。
　The concerned father made a nice room at high place, and imprisoned his son.

　へや の かべ には いろいろな どうぶつ の え が かいて あって、そのなか には ライオン の え も ありました。
　There are some paintings of various animals on the walls of the room, and one of them was of a lion.

　これは むすこ が たいくつ しない よう にと ちちおや が えかき に かかせた もの ですが、むすこ は ちっとも よろこばず、
　That was a painting the father had a painter do to please his son, but he was not

　かえって イライラ する ばかり でした。
　on the contrary, he was just getting frustrated.



　あるひ、むすこ は ライオン の え に むかって、
　One day, the son shouted at the painting of a lion,

「いまいましい けだものめ。
“You, bloody beast!

　ぼく が こんな ろうや に とじこめられた のは、おまえ と おやじ が みた へんな ゆめ の せい だぞ。
　I’m locked away in this prison, and this is because of all you and the strange dream my father had.

　ようし、おもいしらせてやる」
　Look, I’ll give hell to you.”

　こう いいながら、むすこ は ライオン の め を つぶしてしまおう と して かべ に なぐりかかりました。
　As he was saying this, he tried to hit out at the wall to put out the lion’s eyes.

　ところが、ちょうど そこに クギ が つきでて いたので て を けがしてしまい、
　Unfortunately, there was a peg sticking out there and he got his hand injured,

　その けが が もと で むすこ は しんで しまいました。
　and eventually he died from the injury.

　ライオン と いっても え に かいた ライオン ですが、
　Though, it was in fact a lion that was painted,

　それでも むすこ は ほんとう に ライオン に ころされて しまったのです。
　it was still a lion that killed the son.



　じぶん の うんめい には、じぶん で たちむかわなければ なりません。
　Against your fate, you must stand up to it by yourself.

　へや に とじこもる と いった ごまかし ではなく、
　unlike shutting yourself up in the room,

　しょうめん から ゆうかん に たちむかって いくべき だと、この おはなし は おしえて います。
　This story tells that you should act courageously head-on.
