　むかしむかし の おはなし です。
　It happened so long ago.

　あるひ、かみさま は いちばん うつくしい とり を きめる『うつくしい とり コンテスト』を しよう と おもいつきました。
　One day God decided to hold the beauty contest of the birds,

　そして、いちばん うつくしい とり には、とり の おうさま の くらい を あたえよう と いいました。
and the winner shall be a king of all birds.

　それ を きいた とりたち は、おおさわぎ。
　All the birds fussed over it. They said to each other,

「やっぱり、クジャクさん が いちばん きれい だよ」
“After all you are the most beautiful, peacock.”

「あら、スタイル が よい のは はくちょうさん よ」
“Well, the swan has some style!”

「いや、とり は やっぱり うたごえ が きれい で なくちゃね。ウグイスさん なら、えらばれる かも しれないね」
“No, a king of the birds has to be good at singing. I think the spring bird is going to win.”

　みんな、わいわい いいながら、うつくしく なろうと いっしょうけんめい に かわ で はね を あらいました。
　Such a big fuss they’ve made. Each one of them tried their best to become beautiful, cleaned themselves and preened their fine feathers in a river.

　でも カラス だけ が、その なかま に はいりません でした。
　Only a jackdaw didn’t join the group.

　カラス は、ぜんぜん おもしろく ありません でした。
　He didn’t enjoy at all.

　じぶん が あまり かっこよく なくて、はね の いろ も うたごえ も きれい じゃない こと を しっ て いた からです。
　He knew he wasn’t a good-looking, can’t sing, and the color was so ugly. Nothing of him was worth participating in the contest.

　しょんぼり かわべり を とんで いると、みんな の ぬけおちた はね が いっぱい ちらばって いる のを みつけました。
　As he flew over the river feeling so sad, he found many feathers scattered on the ground. He said to himself,

「・・・そうだ、こいつ で みんな を だましてやれ」
“I have an idea. I’m going to fool everybody with these feathers.”

　カラス は いろとりどり の はね を ひろい あつめ、ぜんぶ じぶん の からだ に くっつけて かざりたてました。
　He picked up those colorful feathers attached them to his body trying to decorate himself.



　いよいよ、コンテスト が はじまりました。
　Now, the contest begins.

　かみさま は、あの カラス に め を とめました。
　God couldn’t take his eyes off of the jackdaw.

「おや、あんな に うつくしくて めずらしい とり が いたのか。よし、あの とり を いちばん に しよう」
“What a beautiful and rare bird that is. I think I should make him the winner.”

　カラス は おおよろこび で、かみさま の まえ に すすみでました。
　The jackdaw felt so grateful for knowing himself is the winner. He was so pleased, kneeled to the God.

　すると、いちわ の とり が おこりだしました。
　Then some bird got angry.

「ずるい ぞ、カラス め！　わたし の はね を かえせ！」
“Give me back my feather, you wicked jackdaw!”

　そういって カラス に とびつき、くちばし で じぶん の はね を ひきぬきました。
said the bird and jumped on the jackdaw, pricked him so hard and took his feather out of jackdaw’s body.

　ほか の とりたち も いっせい に はら を たて、カラス から じぶん の はね を むしりとりました。
　The other birds did the same to jackdaw, took each one of their feather out of his body.

　すると カラス は、まえ より も みすぼらしい きたない すがた に なりました。
　Finally the jackdaw became dirtier and uglier than ever.



　ひと の もの を かりて いくら うわべ を かざって も、すぐ に ばれて しまいます。
　Soon you’ll be exposed as a fake, if you take from others.

　そして、それ が ばれる と よけい みじめ に なってしまう。
　Adornments that do not belong to you can lead to humiliation.

と、いう おはなし でした。
　That’s the moral of this story.
