　むかしむかし の、さむいさむい きたぐに での おはなし です。
　Once upon a time, in the cold, cold northern lands…

　あるところに、しげさく(もさく) と おのきち と いう きこり の おやこ が すんでいました。
　there lived an old logger named Shigesaku, and his son, Onokichi.

　この おやこ、やま が すっぽり ゆき に つつまれるころ に なると、てっぽう を もって りょうに でかけていくのです。
　Every year, when the mountains became white snow, they would take their rifle and go hunting.

　あるひ の こと、おやこ は いつものように ゆきやま へ はいっていきましたが、いつのまにか そら は くろぐもに おおわれて、ふぶき と なりました。
　One day, while they were out, vicious clouds rolled in and they found themselves in the middle of a blizzard.

　ふたり は なんとか、きこりごや を みつけました。
　Fortunately, they were able to find a small hut.

「こんやは ここで とまる より、しかたあるめえ」
“We have no choice but to spend the night here.”

「うん だなあ」
　The son agreed.

　ちろちろ と もえる いろり の ひ に あたりながら、ふたり は ひるま の つれからか、すぐにねむりこんで しまいました。
　They were both tired, and while listening to the crackling of the fire, soon fell asleep.

　かぜ の いきおい で と が がたん と ひらき、ゆき が まいこんできます。
　The hut’s door, pushed by the strong wind, was slammed opened…

　そして、いろり の ひ が ふっと きえました。
　and in an instant the fire was put out.

「う〜、さむい！」
“Brrr…. It’s cold!”

　あまり の さむさに め を さました おのきち は、そのとき、ひとかげ を みたのです。
　The chill awoke Onokichi, and it was then that he saw the figure of a person.

「だれじゃ、そこに おるのは？」
“Who is there?”

　そこに すがた を あらわしたのは、わかくうつしい おんなのひと でした。
　From the darkness emerged a young and beautiful woman.

「ゆきおんな！」
“You are the Snow Woman!”

　ゆきおんな は ねむっている しげさく(もさく) の そば に たつと、くち から しろい いき を はきました。
　She stood above Shigesaku, and began to slowly exhale a white frost.

　しげさく(もさく) の かお に しろいいき が かかると、しげさく(もさく) の からだ は だんだんと しろく かわっていきます。
　As the frost reached his face, his body slowly became paler and paler.

　そして ねむったまま、しずかに いき を ひきとってしまいました。
　The old man died peacefully in his sleep.

　ゆきおんな は、こんどは おのきち の ほうへと ちかづいてきます。
　The Snow Woman was now moving toward Onokichi.

「たっ、たすけてくれー！」
“Please, spare me.”

　ひっしで にげようとする おのきち に、なぜか ゆきおんな は やさしく いいました。
　Just as he was about to try to run, she spoke to him softly.

「そなた は まだ わかわかしく、いのち が かがやいています。
“You are young, and full of life.

　のぞみどおり、たすけてあげましょう。
　I will spare you.

　でも、こんや の こと を もしも だれか に はなしたら、そのときは、そなた の うつくしい いのち は おわってしまいましょう」
　But, if you should ever speak to anyone of this night, your precious life will come to an end.”

　そういうと ゆきおんな は、ふりしきる ゆき の なか に すいこまれるよう に きえてしまいました。
　With that being said, the Snow Woman became one with the blowing wind, and vanished.

　おのきち は、そのまま き を うしってしまいました。
　Onokichi fainted.

　やがて あさ に なり め が さめた おのきち は、ちち の しげさく(もさく) が こごえじんでいるの を みつけたのです。
　He awoke the next morning to find his dead father, lying beside him, frozen.


　それから、いちねん が たちました。
　One year later…

　ある おおあめ の ひ、おのきち の いえ の まえ に ひとり の おんなのひと が たっていました。
　on a very rainy day, there was a young woman standing in front of Onokichi’s house.

「あめ で、こまって おいでじゃろう」
“You are soaking wet!.”

　きだて の いい おのきち は、おんなのひと を いえ に いれてやりました。
　Being the kind man that he was, he brought her in from the rain.

　おんなのひと は、おゆき と いう な でした。
　She said her name was Oyuki.

　おのきち と おゆき は ふうふ に なり、かわいいこども にも めぐまれて、それはそれは しあわせ でした。
　Onokichi and Oyuki were married, and blessed with beautiful children. They had a very happy life.

　けれど、ちょっと しんぱい なのは、あついひざし を うけると、おゆき は ふらふら と たおれてしまうのです。
　The only problem was that Oyuki couldn’t stand hot days. She would collapse in the heat.

　でも、やさしい おのきち は、そんな おゆき を しっかりたすけて、なかよく くらしていました。
　But with the help of her tender and caring husband, life went on as normal.

　そんな あるひ、はりしごと を している おゆき の よこがお を みて、おのきち は ふっと とおいひ の こと を おもいだしたのです。
　One day, as Onokichi was watching his wife do needlework, he was reminded of that day, long ago.

「のう、おゆき。わしは いぜんに、おまえ の ように うつくしい おなご を みたこと が ある。
“Oyuki, once before I have met a woman of your beauty.

　おまえ と、そっくりじゃった。
　You look just like her.

　やまで、ふぶきに あっての。
　It was in the mountains, in a blizzard.

　そのときじゃ、あれは たしか、ゆきおんな」
　She was the Snow Woman.”

　すると とつぜん、おゆき が かなしそうに いいました。
　Oyuki became noticeably sad. She said to her husband…

「あなた、とうとう はなしてしまったのね。あれほど やくそくしたのに」
“I have always feared that you would one day break our promise.”

「どうしたんだ、おゆき？」
”Oyuki, what are you saying?”

　おゆき の きものは、いつのまにか しろく かわっています。
　Before his eyes, Oyuki’s clothes became the color of the snow.

　ゆきおんな で ある おゆき は、あのよる の ことを はなされてしまったので、もう にんげん で いることが できないのです。
“Because you have spoken of that day, it is no longer possible for me to live as a human.

「あなた の ことは、いつまでも わすれません。
　I will never forget you.

　とても、しあわせ でした。
　Thank you for everything.

　 こどもを、おねがいしますよ。
　Please take care of our children.

　・・・では、さようなら」
　Goodbye…”

　そのとき、と が ばたん と ひらいて、つめたいかぜ が ふきこんできました。
　A cold wind opened the door with a slam.

　そして、おゆき の すがたは、きえたのです。
　Then, the Snow Woman became one with the wind, and vanished forever.
