　むかしむかし、あるところ に、おじいさん と おばあさん が すんでいました。
　Once upon a time, there lived an old man and his wife.

　ふたり は こども が いなかった ので、シロ と いう イヌ を とても かわいがって いました。
　Since they did not have any children they lovingly cherished their dog called Shiro.



　あるひ、シロ が はたけ で ほえました。
　One day Shiro was digging in the fields.

「ここほれ ワンワン、ここほれ ワンワン」
"Dig here, woof woof, dig here, woof woof" went Shiro.

「おや？　ここを ほれと いっているのか。よしよし、ほってやろう」
You want me to dig here eh？. Ok, I will start digging"

　おじいさん が ほってみると、
　After digging a while what do you think he found?

「ややっ、これは すごい！」
"Wow, this is amazing!"

　なんと、じめん の なか から おおばんこばん が ザクザク と でてきたのです。
　Out from the ground came a bag bursting with gold coins ,some large and some small.



　この はなし を きいた、となり の よくばりじいさん が、
　But a greedy old man from the next house had heard all of this

「わし も、おおばんこばん を てにいれる。おめえ の シロ を、わし に かして くれや」
"I would also like to get my hands on some of those gold coins. Lend me your dog for a while "

　よくばりじいさん は、シロ を むりやり はたけ に つれて いきました。
　The greedy old man, then forcibly took Shiro by the scruff of the neck and walked off.

　そして、いやがる シロ が キャンキャン ないた ところ を ほって みると、くさい ゴミ が たくさん でてきました。
　Whimpering, Shiro unwillingly dug at the ground and revealed what seemed to be a lot of bad smelling rubbish.

「この やくたたず の イヌめ！」
"Bah, what a useless dog you are!"

　おこった よくばりじいさん は、なんと、シロ を なぐりころして しまったのです。
　And with that, the greedy old man proceeded to beat poor Shiro to death.

　シロ を ころされた おじいさん と おばあさん は、なくなく シロ を はたけ に うめて やると、ぼう を たてて おはか を つくりました。
　When the old man and his wife found Shiro, they cried and cried. They then buried Shiro in the field and put a stick in the ground as a grave for him.



　つぎのひ、おじいさん と おばあさん が シロ の おはかまいり に はたけ へ いってみると、シロ の おはか の ぼう が ひとばん の うち に たいぼく に なっていたのです。
　When the old man and his wife went to the field the next day to pray at Shiro's grave, they were astonished to find that the stick they had put in the ground had turned into a giant tree overnight.

　おじいさん と おばあさん は、その き で うす を つくって、おもち を つきました。
　So the old man and his wife made a mortar from the tree trunk and pounded rice for rice cakes.

　すると ふしぎなこと に、もち の なか から たからもの が たくさん でてきました。
　But then a strange thing happened. From out of the rice cakes came all sorts of treasures and such.

　それ を きいた、よくばりじいさん は、
　The greedy old man had been listening nearby again.

「わし も、もち を ついて たから を て に いれる。おめえ の うす を、わし に かして くれや」
"I also wish to pound some rice and receive treasures like you. Lend me your mortar now."

と、うす を むりやり かりる と、じぶん の いえ で もち を ついて みました。
　The greedy old man then snatched up the mortar and took it home to make rice cakes with.

　しかし でてくる のは いしころ ばかり で、たからもの は でてきません。
　But no matter how hard he tried, all he got from there mortar were rocks and stones.

「いまいましい うすめ！」
"What a useless mortar you are!"

　おこった よくばりじいさん は うす を オノ で たたきわる と、やいて はい に してしまいました。
　The greedy old man then picked up his axe and split the mortar in two, and burnt it ,until all that was left was ash.

　たいせつな うす を やかれた おじいさん は、せめて はい だけ でも と、うす を やいた はい を ザル に いれて もちかえろう と しました。
　The old man who's mortar had been burnt to ash, took the ash home with him in a basket.

　そのとき、はい が かぜ に とばされて、かれき に フワリ と かかりました。
　But a strong wind blew up and sent the ash flying and presently it landed on a dead tree.

　すると、どうでしょう。
　Then, what do you think happened?

　はい の かかった かれき に、まんかい の はな が さいた の です。
　The dead tree suddenly burst out in full bloom and came back to life.

　おじいさん は、うれしくなって。
　The old man became very cheerful once more.

「かれき に はな を さかせましょう。パアーッ」
"I will make the whole tree bloom again, there you go.

と、いいながら つぎつぎ に はい を まいて、かれき に うつくしい はな を さかせました。
　The old man then continued to throw ash all over the tree and flowers bloomed in every place.

　ちょうど そこへ、おしろ の おとのさま が とおりかかりました。
　At precisely that time, the lord of a local castle was riding by.

「ほう、これは みごとじゃ」
"Wow, this is a remarkable thing- "

　おとのさま は たいそう よろこんで、おじいさん に たくさん の ほうび を あげました。
　The lord was so pleased with what he saw, that he presently showered the old man with gifts of all sorts.

　それを みていた よくばりじいさん が、
　But, the greedy old man had been watching again.

「おい、わし も はな を さかせて ほうび を もらう。その はい を、わし に よこせ！」
"Hey, I will also make the flowers bloom and receive presents for sure. Hand over that ash to me! "

　むりやり に はい を とりあげる と、おとのさま に いいました。
　He then grabbed the ash from the old man and spoke out to the lord.

「とのさま、この はい は わし の もの です。
"Lord, this is my ash.

　わし が かれき に はな を さかせます から、わしにも ほうび を ください。
　I will make this dead tree bloom once more, so please reward me for it.

　バァーッ！」
　Fly ash!

　よくばりじいさん は とのさま の まえ で たくさん はな を さかせよう と、はい を いっせい に まきました。
　The greedy old man tried to make the flowers bloom, threw all the ash up in the air at one go and straight into the face of the lord.

　すると はい が おとのさま の め に はいって、よくばりじいさん は おとのさま の けらい に さんざん なぐられた と いうことです。
　The ash went straight into the lord’s eyes , so his soldiers beat that greedy old man soundly.

One point of advice: One good turn leads to another. One bad deed after another leads to tragedy.
