　むかしむかし、ハメルン と いう まち に、どこ からか かぞえきれない ほど の ネズミ が やってきて、まち の あちこち に すみついて しまいました。
　Once upon a time, myriad of mice came out of nowhere and ended up in a town called Hamelin.

　こまった まち の ひとたち は ネズミとり を しかけたり、どく の おだんご を ばらまいたり しました が、ネズミ は ますます ふえる ばかり です。
　The townspeople were so annoyed by mice that they set up mouse traps and spread poison baits, but nothing worked. On top of that, the number of mice was even increasing.

「こうなったら、ネコ や イヌ を たより に するしか しかたがない」
"All we can do must be have a cat or dog."

　そう かんがえ て、どこ の いえ でも ネコ や イヌ を かう よう に なりました。
　People believed so and every family owned a dog or cat.

　でも ネコ も イヌ も ネズミ が おおすぎて、ネズミ を つかまえる どころか ネズミたち に おいかけられる しまつ です。
　But, on the contrary, both cats or dogs were chased by mice because there were too many of them.

　そんな ある ひ、ひとり の おとこ が まち へ やってきて、こんな こと を いいました。
　One day, a man came to the town and said,

「ネズミ は、この わたし が たいじ して さしあげましょう。ただし その だいきん と して、きんか せんまい を ちょうだい します」
“I’ll get rid of these mice. In exchange, I’d like a thousand gold coins.”

「おお、ねがってもない。せんまい どころか、にせんまい でも おはらい します」
“Oh, fair enough. We’re willing to give you two thousand, not only a thousand.”

「けっこう。では さっそく、とりかかる と します かな」
“Great. Let’s get to it right away.”

　おとこ は そと へ でる と、て に していた ふえ を ふきならし はじめ ました。
　The man went outside and started to pipe he was holding.

　すると あちこち の いえ から ネズミたち が とびだして、ふえふき の まわり へ あつまって きた では ありませんか。
　Strangely enough, mice dashed out of houses here and there and gathered around the piper.

　ネズミたち を したがえた ふえふき は、ふえ を ふきならし ながら かわ の そば まで やって きました。
　The piper leading the mice came to the riverside while piping.

「どうする つもり だろう？」
"What is he going to do?"

　まち の ひとたち が みて いる と、ふえふき は かわ の なか へ サブサブ と はいって いきました。
　Under the people’s wondering eyes, the piper splashed his way into the river.

　ネズミたち も あと を おって かわ へ とびこむ と、そのまま いっぴき のこらず おぼれしんで しまいました。
　After the mice followed him and entered the river, all of them drowned and died.?

「やった！　やった！」
"He did it! He did it!"

「さあ、おいわい だ！」
"Let's celebrate!"

　まち の ひとたち は おおよろこび で、うたったり おどったり しました。
　The townspeople were singing and dancing with a joy.

　そこへ、ふえふき が もどって きて いいました。
　Later, the piper came back from the river and said,

「ごらん の よう に、ネズミ は のこらず たいじ して さしあげました。それでは、きんか せんまい を いただく と しましょうか」
“As you can see, I killed all of the mice for you. So, can I take a thousand gold coins as you promised?”

「きんか せんまい だって？」
“A thousand gold coins?”

　まち の ひとたち は、しぶいかお を しました。
　People were making a frowning face.

「たかが ネズミ くらい の こと で、きんか せんまい とは たかすぎる では ないか。まあ、じゅうまい くらい は だして やるが」
“We can’t give you a thousand gold coins for only killing mice. We can give you about ten though.”

「さては、やくそく を やぶる つもり ですか？　よろしい。それなら こちら にも かんがえ が ある」
“Are you going to break the agreement? Fine. Then I have an idea!”

　ふえふき は かおいろ を かえる と、すがた を けして しまいました。
　The piper gave a fierce look and then disappeared.

「・・・やれやれ。あきらめたか」
“Whew. He seems to have given up.”

　まち の ひとたち は あんしん して、また うたったり おどったり です。
　The townspeople started to sing and dance again, feeling relieved.

　そのとき、どこか で リュウリュウ と ふえ の ね が ひびき はじめました。
　Then, the vibrant sound of the pipe was heard somewhere.

　ふえふき が まち の ひろば の まんなか で、ふえ を ふき はじめたのです。
　The piper started to pipe in the middle of the town square.

　それと いっしょ に、あちらこちら の いえ から こどもたち が あつまって きました。
　Meanwhile, children gathered from houses here and there.

「ややっ、こどもたち が ふえふき の あと を」
“Holy cow! The children are following the piper.”

　おおあわて で おいかけて いく と、やま の ふもと に ある ほらあな の そば へ やってきました。
　People followed them in a hurry and they reached a cave at the bottom of the mountain.

　ふえふき は ふえ を ふきならし ながら、ほらあな の おく へ はいって いきます。
　The piper was piping and went into the cave.

「わーい、ほらあな だ、ほらあな だ」
“Yay! It’s a cave. It’s a cave.”

　こどもたち も おおよろこび で、ほらあな の なか へ はいって いきました。
　The children were so excited and entered the cave too.

「おーい、まって くれ、まって くれ」
"Hey, wait up! Wait up!"

「わしら が わるかった。やくそくどおり きんか を はらう から、こどもたち を かえして くれ」
“We’re so sorry. We’ll give you the gold coins as we promised so please give us the children back.”

　まち の ひとたち は、こえ を かぎり に よびかけ ました。
　The townspeople shouted at the top of their voice.

　でも もう おそく、いわ が ひとりでに うごきはじめた かと おもう と、ほらあな の いりぐち を ピッタリ と ふさいで しまいました。
　But it was too late and a rock automatically moved and closed the entrance of the cave.



　こうして ハメルン は、こども の ひとり も いない まち と なって しまったのです。
　As a result, Hamelin became a town without any children in it.
