Rainbow birds

　むかしむかし の おおむかし、すベて の とり は くろ か はいいろ の きたない いろ でした。
　Long long ago and way before that, all birds were the color black or a dirty shade of grey.



　あるひ の こと、とりたち が ふと そら を みあげる と、なないろ の きれいな にじ に、ぽつん と くろい シミ が できて いました。
　One day all the birds looked up into the sky and noticed a beautiful rainbow of seven colors with a black mark on it.

「なんだろう？」
"What is that?"

  とりたち が みて いると、その くろい シミ が どんどん ふえて いきます。
  While the birds were looking, the black spot on the rainbow steadily got larger and larger.

　すると てん から なないろ に かがやく とり が まいおりて きて、とりたち に いいました。
　Then, down from the heavens came shining birds of seven colors, and this is what they said.

「にじ に わるい むし が くっついて、きれいな にじ の いろ を くいつくそう と しています。
"Horrible insects have attached themselves to the rainbow and are now trying to eat all up of the seven colors.

  どうか いっしょ に、わるい むし を やっつけて ください」
　Please help us kill those bad insects."

  そこで ゆうき の ある とりたち は、なないろ の とり と いっしょ に わるい むし を やっつける と いいました。
　So, the birds that had enough courage replied to the seven colored birds, that they would help.

　でも ゆうき の ない とりたち は、なないろ の とり が いくら おねがい しても しらんかお です。
　But, no matter how hard the seven colored birds pleaded to the others, the birds without courage just looked away with indifference.

「では、わたしたち だけ で いきましょう」
"Well, let just us fly off up then."

　ゆうき の ある とりたち は、なないろ の とり と いっしょ に とびたちました。
　The courageous birds and the seven colored birds then took off into the air.



　ゆうき の ある とりたち が にじ に やってくる と、にじ は わるい むし に いろ を たべられて ボロボロ でした。
　But when the courageous birds reached the rainbow, they noticed that the insects had eaten away most of the color and that the rainbow was in tatters.

「これは ひどい！　はやく しないと、にじ が まっくろ に なってしまう」
"This is terrible! Hurry up! If we don’t, then the whole rainbow will become black."

　とりたち は、にじ に くっついた むし に おそいかかりました。
　The birds then attacked the insects.

　しかし むしたち も、そう かんたん には やられません。
　However, the insects were not to be beaten so easily.

　とりたち の からだ を おしり の ハリ で さしたり、かみついたり しました。
　The insects stung and bit at the birds with their stings.

　ここまで とんできて つかれていた とりたち には、とても つらい たたかい でした。
　The birds that had flown so far were very tired and had fought a tough battle.

　でも とりたち は がんばって、なんとか むしたち を やっつけました。
　But somehow, they had done their best and fought off the insects.

「やったー！　わるい むし を やっつけたぞ！」
"We did it! The evil insects have been defeated! "

「にじ を、まもったぞ！」
"We saved the rainbow! "

　とりたち は ホッ と して、おたがい の かお を みました。
　The birds looked at each other with relief.

　すると いつのまにか、どの とり も きれいな いろ の はね に なって いたのです。
　Then, the birds noticed their wings had become the most beautiful of colors.

　むしたち と むちゅう で たたかって いる あいだ に、にじ の いろ が からだ に ついて いたのです。
　It seems, that when the birds were fighting with the insects, the colors of the rainbow had mixed with their bodies.

「わあ、きれい な いろ」
"Wow, what beautiful colors"

「みてみて、わたし ピンクいろ よ」
"Look ,look at me. I’m pink."

「ぼく なんか、あおいろ だよ」
"And me! I’m blue."

　みんな が よろこんで いると、なないろ の とり が いいました。
　While all the birds were feeling happy with this, the seven colored birds spoke out.

「その にじ の いろ は、けっして おちません。
"The colors of the rainbow will never leave you now.

　にじ を まもった みなさん の ゆうき を つたえる ため に、その うつくしい いろ は こども や まごたち にも うけつがれる でしょう」
　To all the birds who had enough courage to fight the insects, this beautiful color will also be handed down to your children and grandchildren."



　さて、ちじょう に のこった とりたち は、にじ に いった とりたち が むし に やられて ボロボロ に なって かえってくる と おもって いました。
　Now, all the birds down below on the ground thought that the courageous birds would come back down, defeated and in tatters.

　ところが にじ に いった みんな は、ひかりかがやく ような うつくしい すがた に なって かえって きたのです。
　However, all the birds that came back down were shining brightly and were all of the most beautiful appearance.

「わあ、きれいな いろ。いいなー」
"What beautiful colors! I wish I was that color."

「それに ひきかえ、ぼくたち は・・・」
“If only we could have been so brave, we could have….”

　ちじょう に のこった とりたち は じぶん の みすぼらしい すがた が とても はずかしく なり、コソコソ かくれて しまいました。
　All the birds that had remained on the ground now felt ashamed of their miserable appearance and presently hid themselves away.

　きれいな いろ の とり と そうでない とり が いる のは、こういう わけ なのです。
　So, this is the reason why some birds are of beautiful colors and others are not.
