七夕物語

　夜空に輝く天の川のそばに、天の神さまが住んでいます。
　The god of heaven lived near the Milky Way shining in the night sky.

　天の神さまには一人の娘がいて、名前を、織姫といいます。
　The god of heaven had a daughter. Her name was Ori-hime.

　織姫ははたをおって、神さまたちの着物をつくる仕事をしていました。
　Her job was weaving and creating clothes for gods.

　さて、織姫が年頃になったので、天の神さまは娘にお婿(むこ)さんを迎えてやろうと思いました。　
　One day, the god of heaven thought Ori-hime came of marriageable age and wanted to arrange her marriage.

　そして色々探して見つけたのが、天の川の岸で天のウシを飼っている、彦星という若者です。
　Then, he scouted around and found out Hiko-boshi, who was a cattleman beside the Milky Way.

　この彦星は、とてもよく働く立派な若者です。
　He was a hardworking good young man.

　そして織姫も、とてもやさしくて美しい娘です。
　Ori-hime was also a very kind beautiful lady.

　二人は相手を一目見ただけで、好きになりました。
　They fell in love at first sight.

　二人はすぐに結婚して、楽しい生活を送るようになりました。
　They soon married and had a happy life.

　でも、仲が良すぎるのも困りもので、
　However, that became such a problem.

　二人は仕事を忘れて遊んでばかりいるようになったのです。
　They were always together without working.

「織姫さまがはたおりをしないので、みんなの着物が古くてボロボロです」
“Everyone dresses in ragged clothes because Ori-hime doesn’t work at all.”

「はやく新しい着物をつくるように言ってください」
“Soon, please tell her to weave new clothes.”

「彦星がウシの世話をしないので、ウシたちが病気になってしまいました」
“Cows became sick because Hiko-boshi doesn’t take care for them.”

　天の神さまに、みんなが文句を言いに来るようになりました。
　Everyone came to the god of heaven to complain about.

　天の神さまは、すっかり怒ってしまい、
　The god of heaven became so angry.

「二人は天の川の、東と西に別れて暮らすがよい！」
　And said, “You two must live separate in the east and the west of the Milky Way!”

と、織姫と彦星を別れ別れにしたのです。
　He made them pull away from each other.

「・・・ああ、彦星に会いたい。・・・彦星に会いたい」
“Oh my, I would like to see Hiko-boshi. I really miss him…”

毎日泣き続ける織姫を見て、天の神さまが言いました。
　The god of heaven saw his daughter crying every day and asked.

「娘や、そんなに彦星に会いたいのか？」
“My dear daughter, you miss him so much?”

「はい。会いたいです」
“Of course! I would!”

「それなら、一年に一度だけ」
“Well, only once a year,”

「七月七日の夜だけは、彦星と会ってもよいぞ」
“Only at the night of 7th July, I allow you meet Hiko-boshi.”

　それから織姫は、一年に一度会える日だけを楽しみにして、毎日一生懸命に機をおるのです。
　After that, Ori-hime looked forward to the day, only once a year.

　毎日一生懸命に機をおるのです。
　She wove hard every day.

　天の川の向こうの彦星も、その日を楽しみに天のウシを飼う仕事にせいを出しました。
　Hiko-boshi on the other side of the Milky Way, also looked forward to the day and work hard as a cattleman.

　そして待ちに待った七月七日の夜、
　After all, the night of 7th July was coming.

　織姫は天の川を渡って、彦星のところへ会いに行くのです。
　Ori-hime crossed the Milky Way and go to meet Hiko-boshi.

　しかし雨が降ると天の川の水かさが増えるため、織姫は川を渡る事が出来ません。
　When it rained, the water level of the Milky Way rose and Ori-hime couldn’t cross the river.

　でも大丈夫。
　Though, don’t worry.

　そんな時はどこからともなくカササギと言う鳥が飛んで来て、天の川に橋をかけてくれるのです。
　On such an occasion, a bird called Pica pica came flying and made bridge on the Milky Way.

　さあ、あなたも夜空を見上げて、二人の再会を祝福してあげてください。
　Now, look up at the night sky and celebrate their reunion!
