　赤ちゃんのひたいに「×」や「犬」と書くと、赤ちゃんを悪い物から守るおまじないになります。
(According to the good luck spell, write a “×” or “Dog” on a baby’s forehead, and the baby will be protected from evil.)

　関西ではお宮参りの時に、男の子に「大」、女の子には「小」と書く地方もあります。
(In some place of the Kansai region, when “Omiya-mairi’ (a Shinto ritual similar to the Christian baptism) takes place, they write a “Big” on a baby boy’s forehead and a “Small” on a baby girl’s forehead.)

　平安時代、宮中で生まれた赤ちゃんが悪霊にとらわれないために行うおまじないでした。
(In the Heian Period, this good luck spell was trendy so as to protect babies, who were born in the Imperial Court, from any evil spirits.)

　世界各地にも同じようなおまじないがあり、悪霊を遠ざけるために赤ちゃんにわざとひどい名前を付けたり、みにくい化粧をする国もあるそうです。
(In various places of the world, they have similar good luck spells.  In some country, they deliberately give a terrible name or ugly makeup to a baby so as to push evil spirits away.)
