　むかしむかし、えど の かんだ に ひとり の だいく が いました。
　A long time ago, there lived a carpenter at Kanda in Edo.

　にょうぼう が しんで、とても さびしかった だいく は、いっぴき の みけねこ を かわいがって いました。
　Because his wife died, he was so lonely that he loved one calico cat very much.

　だいく は まいあさ、ねこ の ごはん を ようい して から しごと に でかけます。
　Every morning he prepared her food and went to his work.

　そして ゆうがた に しごと が おわる と、ねこ の だいすき な さかな を おみやげ に かって かえります。
　And when he finished his work, he bought her favorite fish as a souvenir.

　ねこ も だいく の こと が だいすき で、だいく の あしおと を きく と、ちゃん と むかえ に でる の でした。
 The cat also loved the carpenter. On hearing his footsteps, she properly went out to meet her master.

　ところ が あるとき、この だいく は め の びょうき に なって しまいました。
　One day, however, the carpenter got a disease of his eyes.

　そこで、いしゃ に みて もらうと、
　When he went to see the doctor,

「これ は ひどい がんびょう ですな。
“You have terrible eye disease.

　ざんねん ですが、とても わしら の ちから では なおす こと は できません」
　I am sorry to say, but there’s no way we can cure your disease.“

　と、いう の です。
　the doctor told him.

　それから は あまり しごと が できなく なり、だいく は とても びんぼう に なりました。
　Since then, he could not work so much and it made him very poor.

　もちろん、ねこ に さかな を かって やる こと も できません。
　Of course he could not afford to buy any fish for his cat.



　ある ばん、だいく は ねこ に むかって いいました。
　At one night, the carpenter talked to the cat,

「なあ、みけ や。おれ の め は しろく にごる びょうき で、とても なおり そうも ない。
“Hey Mike, my eyes will get cloudy and they won’t get well.

　しごと が できず に くらし も わるく なり、このまま では おまえ を やしなう こと も できん かも しれん。
　I cannot work and we are worse off. I think I may not be able to take care of you anymore.

　いったい、どうした もの かのう？」
　What should I do?”

　だいく は かたり かけて いる うち に、うとうと と、ねむって しまいました。
　As he was talking to the cat, he nodded off to sleep.

　すると ねこ は、その はなし が わかった かの ように、
　Then she cried a little as if she understood his story,

「ニャー」
“Meow.”

と、ちいさく なく と、だいく に すりよって、だいく の め を しきり に なめ はじめた の です。
and she snuggled up to him to start to lick his eye eagerly.

　みぎ の め を なめる と、こんど は ひだり の め を なめます。
　She licked his right eye and then licked his left eye.

　それ に きづいた だいく は、
　When he noticed that,

(へん な こと を するわい)
“What is she doing?”

と、おもい ました が、め を なめられる と、とても きもちち が いい ので、ねこ の すきな よう に させて いました。
　he thought, but when his eyes were licked, it felt good. So he let her do as she wanted.

　それから と いうもの、ねこ は ひま さえ あれば、だいく の め を なめて くれた の です。
　Since then, the cat kept licking his eyes when she found time.

　すると ふしぎ な こと に、だいく の め の にごり は、だんだん と うすれて きました。
　Oddly enough, the cloudy eyes of him were getting clearer.

　そして とおか ばかり たつ と、だいく の め は すっかり なおって、
　Around 10 days later, his eyes were all cured,

　りょうめ とも とても よく みえる よう に なった の です。
and he got much better view of everything.

　ところ が そのころ から ねこ の め が しろく にごって いき、つい に ねこ の め は みえなく なって しまった のです。
　However, from that time, the eyes of the cat began clouding and she lost her eyesight at last.

　でも、しんぱい する こと は ありません。
　But there was nothing to worry about.

　め の なおった だいく は め の みえなくなった ねこ を いままで いじょう に かわいがり、
　The carpenter whose eyes were cured loved the blind cat much more than before,

　ねこ は なにふじゆう なく しあわせ に だいく と くらした の でした。
and the cat lived with the carpenter happily ever after.
