　むかしむかし、あるところに、うそつき の めいじん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a man called a great liar.

　あまりにも じょうず に うそ を つくので、だまされた ひと は おこる どころか かんしん してしまうほどでした。
　His lies were so brilliant that those who were deceived got impressed rather than got angry.

　あるとき、おしろ の とのさま が この おとこ を よびよせました。
　One day, a lord called over the liar to his castle.

「おまえ は、うそつきめいじん だ そうだな。うまく わし を だませた なら、なんでも すきな もの を やろう」
”I know you are the great liar. If you can deceive me, I will give you whatever you want.”

　すると、おとこ が こたえました。
　Then the liar answered.

「じつは、わたし が うそ を つくには 『 うそつきぶくろ 』 と いう もの が いるのです。
”To tell you the truth, I need a“ liar’s bag” when to lie about things.

　きょう は いえ の たんす の うえ に その ふくろ を おいて きたので、とってこない と うそ を つけません」
　I forgot it on top of the cabinet at home, I can not make up a lie without the bag.”

　とのさま は、けらい を おとこ の いえ に やりました。
　The lord sent out a servant to the liar’s home.

　しばらくして けらい は もどってくる と、とのさま に いいました。
　After a while, the servant came back to the castle, and said to the lord.

 「おとこ の いえ の すみからすみまで さがしました が、『 うそつきぶくろ 』 など ありませんでした」
”I looked for the bag all over his house, but there is no “liar’s bag” in his house. ”

　それ を きいて、おとこ は いいました。
　And the liar said,

「そうです。もともと そんな ふくろ は ありません。これが うそ です」
”That’s right. There is no such thing as a liar’s bag. ”

「むっ、あっぱれじゃ！」
”Oh, well done!”

　みごと に うそ を つかれた とのさま は おおよろこび で、うそつきめいじん に たくさん の ほうび を あげました。
　The lord were highly pleased with his great lie, and he rewarded the liar very much.
