　のど の かわいた シカ が、いずみ の ほとり へ やってきました。
　A stag felt thirsty and went to a fountain.

　みず を のんだ あと、ふと みると、じぶん の かげ が みず に うつっています。
　After taking a gulp of water, the stag found his reflection in the water.

　おおきくて、いくつもの えだ に わかかれた つの は、われながら うっとり する ほど りっぱ です。
　The stag was admiring and praising his large and branching antlers.

　シカ は、すっかり とくい に なりました。
　He was so proud of himself and felt as if he was sitting on top of the world.

　ところ が あし を みると、ヒョロヒョロ して たよりない かんじ なので、がっかり してしまいました。
　However, when he looked at his legs, he was so disappointed because the legs were so spindly and undependable.

「せっかく、これほど りっぱな つの を もっている のに、この あし では なさけない」
“This is pathetic. I have such majestic antlers, but see my legs.”

　シカ が みず に うつった じぶん の すがた を ながめて かんがえこんでいる ところ へ、とつぜん ライオン が あらわれました。
　While he was contemplating his reflection in the water, a lion appeared all of sudden.

　シカ は、いそい で にげました。
　The stag immediately fled the lion.

　ライオン は おいかけました が、シカ は あし の はやい どうぶつ ですから、いくら つよい ライオン でも おいつけません。
　As the lion chased the stag, however he was running his utmost speed, the lion could not catch him.

　それどころか、シカ は ずんずん と ライオン を ひきはなして しまいました。
　In fact, he left the lion far behind him.

　のはら が つづいている あいだ は、シカ は ライオン の ずっとさき を にげていく こと が できました。
　As long as he ran on the smooth plain, he could keep himself at a safe distance from the loin.

　そのうち に、シカ は もり に さしかかりました。
　Then he entered a wood.

　すると、おおきな つの が き の えだ に ひっかかって、うまく はしれなくなりました。
　His large antlers got tangled in the branches and he was stuck in the wood.

　そうして、ぐずぐず している うち に、ライオン に おいつかれて つかまって しまいました。
　While he was struggling to pull himself free, the lion captured and caught him.

　ライオン の えじき に なった シカ は、しぬまえ に こころ の なか で いいました。
　As the stag was dying, he said to himself,

「なさけない こと だ。わたし に にくまれていた あし が わたし を たすけてくれた のに、
“Woe is me. These legs I despised could have saved me,

　わたし が じまん していた つの の ため に、こうして しななければ ならないとは」
　while I am dying by the antlers I boasted about.”



　この シカ と おなじ よう に あぶない め に あった とき、ふだん は あまり しんよう していなかった ともだち が わたしたち を たすけてくれ、
　The story shows when people are in danger, the friends who are less trustworthy would be a help,

　はんたい に いつも しんじていた ともだち が わたしたち を みすてること が あるものです。
　while the friends whom they trusted would abandon them.
