　むかし、ゼウス の かみ は、にんげん の おとこ と おんな を つくった あと、ヘルメス を よんで、
　Long time ago, when Zeus had created man and woman, he called and ordered Hermes,

「この にんげんたち を ちじょう へ つれていって、しょくもつ を てにいれる には どの とち を たがやせば よいか を おしえてやれ」と、いいつけました。
“Take them to the Earth and show them how to cultivate the land to obtain food.”

　ヘルメス は ゼウス の めいれい どおり、にんげん を つれて ちじょう へ やってきました。
　As he was ordered, he took the man and woman to the Earth.

　だいち の かみ は、はじめ、とち を たがやさせるのは いや だと いいました。
　At first, the Earth refused to be cultivated.

「しかし、これは ゼウス の かみ の めいれい なのですぞ」
“This is the order from Zeus.”

と、ヘルメス が つよく いいますと、だいち の かみ は、
　When Hermes insisted, the Earth replied,

「じゃあ、まあ、すきな だけ たがやす が いいさ。
“All right. Then let them dig as much as they like,

　かわり に わたし は、にんげんたち の くろう や なみだ を もらう こと に するから」
　but they will pay for it with pains and tears”



　この おはなし は、かんたん に おかね を かりて、かえす のに たいそう くろう する ひと に あてはまる はなし です。
　This story is applicable for people who take out loans without thinking but who then find it very hard to pay them back.
