　ライオン が びょうき に なって、ほらあな の なか で ねていました。
　A lion became ill and was resting in a cave.

　この ライオン は、いっぴき の キツネ と なかよし でした。
　This lion hit it off with a fox.

　おみまい に きてくれた キツネ に、ライオン は たのみました。
　The lion asked a favor to the fox when he visited the cave.

「ぼく の びょうき を なおしたい と おもうのなら、もり に いる シカ を だまして ここに つれてきて くれないか。
“If you want to cure my disease, can you deceive a deer in the forest and take it here?

　ぼく は シカ の はらわた と しんぞう が たべたくて たまらないんだ」
　I’m craving for a deer’s gut and heart.”

　キツネ は、シカ を さがし に いきました。
　The fox went out to find a deer.

　まもなく、もり の なか で はねまわっている シカ が みつかりました。
　Before long, he found a deer jumping around in the forest.

　キツネ は、シカ に ちかづく と、
　The fox came up to the deer and said,

「あなた に いいはなし が あります。
“I’ll tell you what.

　われわれ の おうさま で ある ライオンくん が、いま びょうき で し に そう なんです。
　Our king Lion has been deadly sick.

　それで ライオンくん は、じぶん が しんだ あと の おうさま を だれ に するか かんがえました。
　And Lion considered who should be the king after he dies.

　イノシシ は あたま が わるいし、クマ は のろまだ。
　Wild boars are stupid and bears are sluggish.

　ヒョウ は おこりっぽいし、トラ は すぐ に いばる。
　Leopards are short-tempered and tigers are bossy.

　そこで、シカくん なら せ が たかくて りっぱ だし、ながいき するし、どうどう と した つの は あるしで。
　Deer, on the other hand, are nice and tall with steady horns.

　と、ここまで いえば わかるでしょう。
　You know what I’m trying to say, don’t you?

　ライオンくん は つぎ の おうさま に、あなた を えらびました。
　Lion chose you for the next king.

　シカくん、おうさま に なりたい の なら、はやく ライオンくん の ところへ いって ください」
　If you want to be the king, rush to Lion immediately.”

　キツネ の はなし を きいて、シカ は すっかり とくい に なりました。
　By listening to the fox, the deer got excited.

　そして、キツネ に ついていって、ライオン の ほらあな に はいりました。
　Then he followed the fox to the cave where the lion was

　たちまち、まちかまえていた ライオン が シカ に とびかかりました が、しくじって、シカ の みみ を ひきさいた だけ でした。
　Soon, the lion tried to attack the deer but he ended up tearing apart the deer’s ears.

　シカ は いちもくさん に、もり に にげかえりました。
　The deer ran back to the forest.

「おねがい だ。もういちど、なんとかして、あの シカ を つれてきて くれよ」
“Will you do me a favor? Can you please take that deer here for God's sake?”

「うーん、やっかい で、むずかしい こと を たのむ なあ。まあいい。なんとか やって あげるよ」
“Well, you’re putting me to so much trouble. But ok. I’ll manage that.”

　そして キツネ は、まるで りょうけん の ように シカ の あしあと を つけて いきながら、どうやって だまそうか と あたま を ひねりました。
　Like a hunting dog, the fox followed the footprints of the deer and puzzled over how he could deceive the deer.

　とちゅう、ヒツジかいたち に あった ので、キツネ は、
　On the way, the fox ran into some shepherd.

「ちまみれ に なった シカ を、みかけません でしたか？」
“Have you seen a bloody deer?”

と、たずねました。
asked the fox.

「ああ、あそこ の はやし の なか の ねぐら に いるよ」
“Oh, I saw it in the den over there in the woods.

　おしえられた キツネ は、やすんでいる シカ の ところ へ いって、すました かお で あいさつ を しました。
　The fox headed there and calmly greeted the deer resting.

　シカ は カンカン に おこって、け を さかだてて いいました。
　The deer got furious and said with the fur ruffled,

「けがわらしい キツネ め！
“You, filthy fox!

　もう、だまされないぞ！
　You can't fool me again.

　そば に きたら いのち は ない と おもえ！
　If you get closer to me, you’ll die.

　おまえ が どんな わるもの か、しらない やつ を だまし に いく が いい。
　Go deceive someone who has no idea how bad you are.

　おうさま に してやる と いって、おだててやれ」
　Tell them that they’ll be the king.”

　すると、キツネ は、
　Then the fox said,

「あんた は、それほど こしぬけ の ひきょうもの なのかい？
“Are you a coward like chicken?”

　そんな ふう に、わたしたち を うたぐる なんて。
　Don’t suspect us like this.

　ライオンくん が あんた の みみ を つかまえた のは、おうさま に なった とき の こころがまえ を おしえよう と したんだよ。
　Lion caught your ears to tell you how to complete your mental preparation when you become the king.

　それなのに あんた は、びょうき の ライオンくん が ちょっと ひっかいた のも がまんできない なんて。
　But you couldn’t tolerate even when the sick Lion made a little scratch on you.

　あんた の ふがいなさ に おこった ライオンくん は、こんど は オオカミ を おうさま に すると いっているよ。
　Lion got mad at your cowardice and now he says he’ll choose a wolf for the king.

　こまるなあ。
　It would be so bad for us

　らんぼうもの の オオカミ が おうさま に なっては。
　if a violent wolf were to become the king.

　だからさ、わたし と いっしょ に きてくれよ。
　So come with me.

　ライオンくん が、あんた に がい を くわえる はず が ない。わたし が ほしょう する から」
　Lion won’t hurt you. I guarantee it.”

　こんな ふう に、キツネ は シカ を いいくるめて、もういちど ライオン の ところ へ つれて いきました。
　The fox talked the deer into going to the lion again.

　シカ が ほらあな に はいる と ライオン は、
　As soon as the deer entered the cave, the lion said,

「こんど は ごちそう を のがさないぞ！」
“I’m not going to let you go again!”

と、ばかり、ほね から はらわた まで、ガツガツ と たべて しまいました。
　Then he ate from the bones to the gut of the deer.

　キツネ は、そば で ながめて いました。
　The fox was watching it beside them.

　その あしもと に、シカ の しんぞう が こぼれ おちました。
　A heart of the deer fell down to his feet.

　キツネ は それ を さっと ひろって、さんざん はたらかされた うめあわせ にと、ぺろり と たべて しまいました。
　The fox quickly picked it up and ate it because he thought he deserved it after working hard for the lion.

　ライオン は、はらわた を はし から たべました が、しんぞう だけが みつかりません。
　The lion munched the gut but couldn’t find the heart.

「しんぞう は、どうした の だろう？」
　“Where’s the heart?”

と、しきり に さがしています。
　The lion was eagerly looking for it.

　それ を みて キツネ は、ライオン の て の とどかない ところ まで にげて から いいました。
　The fox went beyond the reach of the lion and said,

「この シカ には、もともと しんぞう が なかった から、さがしても むだ だよ。
“This deer didn’t have a heart so it’s no use looking for it.

　だって、ふつう の しんぞう を もっている どうぶつ なら、ライオン の すみか へ にど も、のこのこ やってくる はず が ないだろう」
　If the deer had had a heart, he wouldn’t have come to the lion’s cave twice.”



　この おはなし は、えらくなって いばりたい と いう きもちち が あんまり つよい と、ものごと を みさだめる こと が できなくなり、
　This story tells us that if you become too bossy, you can’t make sure of things

　きき が さしせまっている の にも き が つかない と いうこと を おしえています。
　and notice the imminent danger.
