　ひとり の やぶいしゃ が、びょうにん を しんさつ しました。
　A bad doctor examined a sick person.

　ほか の いしゃたち は、
　Other doctors would say,

「この びょうにん は たいしたこと は ないけれど、すっかり なおる には じかん が かかる」
“This sick person is not in a serious condition, but it’ll take a while for a full recovery.”

と、いっていた の ですが、この やぶいしゃ だけ は、
　This bad doctor, however, said,

「おきのどく だが、この びょうにん は あす まで いきられませんな。
“I’m sorry to tell you that this sick person won’t survive until tomorrow.

　かくご を きめる ほう が よいでしょう」
　You should prepare for the worst.”

と、いって、かえっていきました。
　And then he left.



　それから しばらく たって びょうにん は おきられる よう に なり、
　A little while later, the sick person came to be able to get up

　まだ かおいろ は わるく あし も ふらふら していましたが、そと に でる こと が できました。
　and go out even though he was still pale and shaky on his feet.

　ふらふら と あるいて いますと、むこう から いつか の やぶいしゃ が きました。
　As he was tottering along, he saw the bad doctor coming from the opposite side.

「やあ、こんにちは。
“Hello there.

　じごく の ひとたち は、ごきげん いかがですか？」
　How are people doing in the hell?”

と、やぶいしゃ は あいさつ しました。
　the bad doctor greeted him.

　すると びょうにん は、すまして こたえました。
　The sick person, then, calmly responded,

「みんな、のんびり やっていますよ。
“Everyone there has been taking it easy.

　ごぞんじ の とおり、
　As you know,

　このよ と じごく の あいだ に ある じごく の かわ の みず を のめば、なんでも わすれて しまいますからね。
　you can forget about everything if you drink water from the river on the border of this world and the hell.

　ただ さいきん、しにがみ と じごく の だいおう ハデス が、いしゃ は けしからん と、ひどく はら を たてて いました。
　But recently, Death and the king of the hell got furious at doctors.

　『いしゃ が いる おかげ で びょうにん が しなない ので、じごく が ふけいき に なる』
　‘The hell has had less people because a lot more sick people tend to survive thanks to doctors, ’

と、いう の ですよ。
　they say.

　それで しにがみたち は ぜんぶ の いしゃ を やっつけようとして、いしゃ と いう いしゃ の なまえ を かきとめて いました。
　Then, they were intending to get rid of all doctors

　いしゃ と いう いしゃ の なまえ を かきとめて いました。
　and writing down every single name of them on their list.

　あなた の なまえ も かこう と しましたから、わたし は おおいそぎ で ふたり の かみさま の まえ に ひれふして、
　I noticed they were also trying to put down your name so I lied on the ground.

　『この ひと は ほんとう の いしゃ では ない から、たすけて あげてください』
　‘Please help him because he is not a real doctor.’

と、おねがい した の ですよ」
　I begged.”



　この おはなし は、くちさき ばかり たっしゃ で びょうにん を なおす こと を しらない いしゃ を やっつけて います。
　This story has ironic overtone of doctors who don’t really mean to cure sick people.
