　おおガラス は、にんげん の みらい を うらなう こと が できる と かんがえられて いました。
　It was believed that a raven could tell you about the future of humanity.

　ひとびと は おおガラス の なきかた で えんぎ が よいか どうか を うらない、
　Ancient people guessed whether or not they would have good luck by hearing how a raven croaked,

　おおガラス を だいじ に して さいばん の しょうにん に する ほど でした。
　or sometimes made it a witness for a trial.

　おなじ カラス でも こガラス は、すこし も だいじ に されません。
　A crow, on the other hand, was not treated well at all.

　それで こガラス は おおガラス を ねたんで、じぶん も ひとつ うらない を やってみよう と おもいました。
　The crow was so jealous of ravens that he tried to tell fortune.

　たびびと が やってくる のを みた こガラス は、いっぽん の き に とまって おおきな こえ で なきました。
　When the crow saw some travelers coming, he perched on a tree and croaked.

　その こえ を きいて、たびびとたち は、
　On hearing his croaking, the travelers were frightened and

「ギョッ！」
(これに該当する英語の擬態語はありませんので省略させていただきました)

　と、して ふりかえりました。
　turned around.

　しかし、なか の ひとり が いいました。
　But one of them said,

「さあさあ、どんどん たび を つづけましょう。
“Let’s keep going and continue our trip.

　いま ないた のは こガラス ですよ。
　It was just a crow that croaked.

　あんなもの は うらない とは、ちっとも かんけい が ありません」
　It should have nothing to do with fortune telling.

　にんげん も おなじ こと です。
　This could apply to us human.

　さいのう の ない ひと が さいのう の ある ひと の まね を して みても、
　If someone who has no talent copies someone who has talent,

　かなわない だけでなく、わらいもの に なって しまいます。
　you might not be like him or her but just end up being laughed up.
