　あるひ、いっせき の ふね が のっていた おおぜい の ひと と ともに、うみ に しずんで しまいました。
　One day a ship packed with plenty of passengers sank into the sea.

　それを みていた、ひとり の おとこ が、
　There was a man who saw the ship sink, and he said,

「かみさま の やりかた は まちがっている！
“God doesn't know what he's doing!

　あの ふね には ばちあたりな にんげん が ひとり のっていた だけ なのに、
　There is only one man that should receive divine punishment in the ship.

　その ひと を ばつ する ため に おおぜい の つみ の ない ひと を しなせる なんて、まったく ひどい はなしだ」
　It's such a terrible thing as sinking the ship and killing so many people in order to punish that man.”

　ちょうど そこは、アリ が たくさん いる ばしょ でした ので、
　In the meantime, there were plenty of ants at the place where the man, who expressed his opinion about God's sinking the ship, stood.

　いっぴき の アリ が この うるさい おとこ を ちくり と さしました。
　Then one of the ants bit him once.

「うっ！　アリ の くせ に にんげんさま を かみやがって、こうして くれる！」
“Ouch! You're just an ant. How could you bite a human being? Shame on you!”

　すると おとこ は、たった いっぴき の アリ が さした だけ なのに、
　Even though the ant bit him only once,

　そこに いた アリ を のこらず ふみつぷして しまいました。
　he trod all the ants that he could see around him.

　そのとき、ヘルメス の かみ が あらわれて おとこ に こう いいました。
　Then God Hermes appeared, and said to him,

「どうだ、
“Well,

　これでも おまえ は、おまえ が アリ を さばく のと おなじ よう に、かみ が にんげん を さばく のは けしからん と いう つもりか」
　see what you've done. After even reflecting on what you've done, can you still say that God can't punish human beings like you did to the ants?”



　この おはなし は、ひと の やりかた に もんく を いいながら、じぶん も おなじ やりかた を する ひと に きかせる おはなし です。
　This is a story for those who make a fuss about what others are doing, but do the same things as others.
