　ある むら に、ヒツジかい の おとこのこ が いました。
　There was a shepherded-boy in a village.

　くるひもくるひも、しごと は ヒツジ の ばん ばかり。
　Day after day, all he had to do was to look after his sheep.

　おとこのこ は あきあき してしまい、ちょっと いたずら を したくなりました。
　He was so tired of it and felt like teasing the other.

　そこで おとこのこ は、とつぜん おおごえ を あげました。
　Suddenly the shepherded-boy cried out,

「たいへん だ！　オオカミ だ。オオカミ だー！」
“A wolf! There’s a wolf!”

　むらびと が おどろいて、かけつけて きました。
　The villagers heard him and rushed over to him.

　それ を みて、おとこのこ は おおわらい。
　And the shepherded-boy gave a big laugh at them.

　なんにち か して、おとこのこ は また おおごえ を あげました。
　A few days later, shepherded-boy cried out again,

「たいへん だ！　オオカミ だ。オオカミ だー！」
“A wolf! There’s a wolf!”

　むらびと は、こんど も とびだして きました。
　Once again the villagers heard him and rushed over to him.

　おとこのこ は それ を みて、またもや おおわらい。
　The shepherded-boy got a good laugh out of them.

　ところが あるひ、ほんとう に オオカミ が やってきて、ヒツジ の むれ を おそいました。
　But one day, a wolf really came and attacked the boy’s sheep.

　おとこのこ は あわてて、さけびごえ を あげました。
　The shepherded-boy was in fevered haste, cried out for a help,

「オオカミ が きた！　オオカミ が きた！　ほんとう に オオカミ が きたんだよー！」
“A wolf! Wolf! I mean it!”

　けれども むらびと は、しらんぷり です。
　But this time no one came for a help.

　なんども うそ を いう おとこのこ を、だれ も しんじようとは しなかったのです。
　No one believed the shepherded-boy telling the truth.

　かわいそう に、おとこのこ の ヒツジ は オオカミ に みんな たべられて しまいました。
　Poor boy, his sheep had all eaten by the wolf.

　この おはなし は、うそつき は たとえ ほんとう の こと を いって も、だれ も しんじて くれない こと を おしえています。
　Nobody believes a liar even when telling the truth.
