　むかし むかし、ある くに の とのさま には、とても うつくしい おきさき が いました。
　A long time ago, there lived a king who had a very beautiful queen.

　おきさき は みごもって いました が、とのさま は まだ しりません。
　The queen was pregnant, but the king didn’t know that.



　あるひ の こと、おきさき は とのさま の ごはん を はこぶ とちゅう、「プッ」 と、ちいさな おなら を してしまいました。
　One day, when she was carrying king’s meal, she passed a little gas “pff”.

　すると とのさま は おこって、
　On hearing that, the king got angry and said,

「ぶれいもの！　おまえ の ような もの は、しまながし じゃ！」
“What a rude queen you are! Such a rude fellow should be banished!”

と、おきさき を とおく の しま へ しまながし に した の です。
　And he banished the queen to the far island.

　しまながし に された おきさき は、その しま で おとこのこ を うんで そだてて、いつしか じゅうねん あまり が たちました。
　The banished queen gave birth to a boy in the island and brought him up for about ten years.



　あるひ の こと、おきさき は こども から、
　One day, the queen was asked by her child,

「どうして いえ には、おとう が おらんの？」
“Why we don’t have a father in our home?”

と、たずねられて、しまながし に された りゆう を ありのまま に はなしました。
　She told him the truth why she was banished.

「そうか。おら の おとう が とのさま だなんて しらなかった。
“I see. I didn’t know my dad is a king.

　・・・よし、おら、とのさま に あってくる」
　… OK. I will go to see him.”

　おとこのこ は ひとり で ふね を こいで うみ を わたる と、おしろ の ちかく で ナスビ の なえ を うりあるき ました。
　The boy rowed a boat to cross the sea by himself, and he sold seedlings of eggplant near the castle.

「えー、きん の ナスビ の なる なえ は、いらんかなあ。きん の ナスビ の なえ」
“Would you like a seedling of golden eggplant? It is a seedling of golden eggplant.”

　その こえ を きいて、とのさま は さっそく おとこのこ を おしろ に よびました。
　As soon as the king heard the voice, the king called him out to the castle.

「きん の ナスビ が なる とは、じつ に めずらしい。
“It is very unusual to have a golden eggplant.

　ぜんぶ かって も よい が、その なえ は、だれにでも そだてられる の かな？」
　I can buy all of them, but is it easy to cultivate the plant?”

　とのさま が たずねる と、おとこのこ が こたえました。
　When the king asked, the boy answered.

「だれにでも、と いう わけ では ありません。
“Not all the people can cultivate.

　でも、うまれて いちど も おなら を した こと の ない ひと が そだてれば、
　But if a person who has never passed gas cultivates,

　それは みごと な きん の ナスビ が できます」
　a great golden eggplant will grow.”

　おとこのこ の へんじ に、とのさま は おこり だしました。
　As the boy replied, the king got angry.

「ばかもの！　この よ の どこ に、いちど も へ を しない もの が おるか。
“Then, all the boys wetted their eyes with spit and began to pretend to cry.

　いいかげん な もの を うりあるく と、ただ では おかんぞ！」
　If you are selling a sloppy thing, you won’t get away with it!”

「おや？　では とのさま に うかがいます が、
“Really? Then I would like to ask you one thing.

　この くに では おなら を しても、つみ には ならない の ですか？」
　Won’t it be guilty if anyone fart in this country?”

「あたりまえ じゃ！
“What are you asking?

　そんな こと を いちいち つみ に して いた の では、くに が なりたって ゆかん」
　If I punish on such a trivial thing, my country will perish.”

「そうですか。
“I understand.

　けれど、わたし の はは は むかし、ちいさ な おなら を ひとつ した だけ で しまながし に されました。
　But my mother was banished when she passed a little gas long time ago.

　それ を、おわすれ でしょうか？」
　Don’t you remember?”

「なっ、なんじゃと・・・」
“What, what are you talking about…?”

　とのさま は ハッ と して、おとこのこ を みつめ ました。
　He was surprised and stared at the boy.

　よく みると、め も くちもと も、じぶん に そっくり です。
　Looking at the boy carefully, his eyes and mouth were exactly like the king.

「すると、おまえ は、もしや・・・」
“Then you must be….”

　くわしい わけ を きく と、とのさま は おとこのこ が じぶん の こども だと わかり ました。
　The boy told the king all the story and the king got to know the boy was a son of him.

「いままで、つらい おもい を させて すまなかった。
“I am so sorry that you have had a hard time.

　すぐ に、つま を しま へ むかえ に いこう」
　Let’s go and get my wife to the island right now.”



　その ご、おかあさん と おとこのこ は、おしろ で しあわせ に くらした の でした。
　The queen and the boy lived in the castle happily ever after.
