　むかしむかし、ある ところ に、びんぼう な ふるどうぐや が いました。
　A long time ago, there lived a poor man who had an old furniture store.



　あるひ の こと、ふるどうぐや は いっぴき の タヌキ が、ワナ に かかっている のを みつけました。
　One day, the man found a raccoon dog which was caught in a trap.

　ふるどうぐや は かわいそう に おもって、その タヌキ を ワナ から たすけて やりました。
　The man felt sorry for the raccoon dog, so he helped it from the trap.



　つぎ の ひ の あさ、きのう の タヌキ が ふるどうぐや の ところ へ やって きて いいました。
　In the next morning, the raccoon dog of yesterday came to the man and said,

「きのう は、ほんとう に ありがとう ございました。
“Thank you very much for your help yesterday.

　おれい に、よいこと を おしえましょう。
　I will tell you a good thing in return.

　となり むら の おしょうさん が ちゃがま を ほしがっています から、ちゃがま を もって いけば よろこびますよ。
　The Osho in the nearby village wants to have a teapot. If you bring one to him, he will be pleased.

　わたし が ちゃがま に ばけます から、もっていって うって ください」
　I will transform into a teapot and you bring it to him and sell.”

　そう いう と タヌキ は くるり と ちゅうがえり を して、すばらしい きん の ちゃがま に ばけました。
　Then the raccoon dog flipped and transformed into a beautiful golden teapot.



　さっそく ふるどうぐや が、ちゃがま を もっていく と、
　Soon after the man took the teapot to the Osho,

「うーん、これ は みごと！」
“Wow, this is beautiful!”

と、おしょうさん は タヌキ の ばけた ちゃがま を たいへん き に いった ようす で、とても たかい ね で かいとって くれました。
　The Osho very much liked the teapot that the raccoon dog transformed into, and he bought it at a high price.



　さて、あたらしい ちゃがま を て に いれた おしょうさん は、こぼうず に、
　Now the Osho who bought a new teapot told to his young priest,

「この ちゃがま を、あらって きなさい」
“Go wash this teapot.”

と、いいました。

“Yes.”

　こぼうず は さっそく、うら の かわ へ いって ちゃがま を ゴシゴシ と あらい ました。
　Soon after, the young priest went to a river behind the temple and he scrubbed the teapot hard.

　すると ちゃがま は、
　Then the teapot spoke

「おい こぼうず。もっと やさしく あらって くれ。しり が いたくて たまらん」
“Hey, young man. Wash me gently. It hurts my bottom.”

と、しゃべった の です。
　to the young priest.

「うひゃー、ちゃがま が しゃべった！！」
“Oh my goodness! The teapot spoke!”

　びっくり した こぼうず は あわてて おしょうさん に この こと を はなしました が、おしょうさん は しんじて くれません。
　The surprised young priest told about what had happened to the Osho, but he didn’t believe the young man.

「なに を ばかな。ちゃがま が しゃべる はず なかろう」
“What a joke. How can the teapot speak?”

「でも、ほんとう なんです」
“But it’s true.”

「まあ よい。それより つぎ は、おゆ を わかして おくれ」
“All right. Anyway, boil some water now.”

　そこで こぼうず は いわれる まま に、タヌキ の ばけた ちゃがま に みず を いれて ひ に かけました。
　As he was told, the young priest put some water in the teapot which the raccoon dog transformed into and put it on a fire.

　すると ちゃがま に ばけた タヌキ は、びっくり です。
　Now the raccoon dog got surprised.

「あちちちち！　おしり に ひ が ついた！」
“It’s hot! It’s hot! Fire on my bottom!”

　タヌキ は いちもくさん に、やま へ にげて いきました。
　The raccoon dog ran for his life to the mountain.



　その よる、タヌキ は また、ふるどうぐや の いえ に やってきて いいました。
　At that night, the raccoon dog came to the house of the old furniture shop and said,

「ふたり で、まち へ いきましょう。
“Let’s go to a town together.

　わたし が つなわたり を します から、ひと を あつめて くださいな」
　I will do tightrope act, and you gather people.”



　つぎ の ひ、ふるどうぐや と タヌキ は まち へ でかけて、しばいや を かしきり ました。
　On the next day, the man of the old furniture shop and the raccoon dog went to a town and rent a playhouse.

「さあさあ、よ にも めずらしい、タヌキ の つなわたり だよ」
“Hello people. It is a rare chance to see a raccoon dog walking on a tightrope!”

　いりぐち で ふるどうぐや が おおごえ で いう と、
　and the raccoon dog skillfully walked on the tightrope with drumming on his belly and singing.

　タヌキ は つな の うえ を きよう に わたり ながら はらづつみ を うったり うたったり します。
　"What's this!! ..."

「これは、めずらしい。なんて、おもしろいんだろう」
“Oh, this is unusual. How interesting it is.”

　タヌキ の つなわたり は だいひょうばん と なり、まいにち おすな おすな の おおにぎわい です。
　A tightrope raccoon dog became a sensation and the playhouse was so crowded every day.



　こうして ふるどうぐや は タヌキ の おかげ で、おおがねもち に なった と いう こと です。
　Thanks to the raccoon dog, the man of the old furniture shop became rich afterwards.
