　むかしむかし、いっきゅうさん と いう、とんち で ひょうばん の こぞうさん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a well known priest apprentice boy named Ikkyu.



　いぜん、いっきゅうさん に 『びょうぶのトラ』で とんちしょうぶ を して、みごと に まけた あの とのさま が、また いっきゅうさん を おしろ に まねき ました。
　Well, we have all heard before of the quick witted Ikkyu and his wonderful victory over the Lord of the castle in the Tiger and The Folding Screen story. The Lord had been so put out by this that he invited Ikkyu there once more

「いっきゅう よ。よく きてくれたな」
"Hello, Ikkyu .Thank you so much for coming again."

「はい。および と あれば、なんどでも。して、きょう は どのような もんだい ですか？」
"Of course. Willing to serve you whenever you ask of me sire. Well, what do you require of me today? "

　いっきゅうさん が きく と、とのさま は わらいながら いいました。
　After Ikkyu had asked this ,the Lord burst out laughing.

「アハハハハハッ。
"Ha, ha ha ha ha.

　ようじん して おるな。
　You’re a precautious one aren’t you.

　だが、あんしん せい。
　But , please relax.

　きょう は そなた に、ごちそう を して やろう と よんだ だけじゃ」
　I only called you here today so that I could treat you to a feast."

　そう いって とのさま は、いっきゅうさん に たいへん な ごちそう を だしました。
　After saying so, the lord ordered up some of the most wonderful treats for Ikkyu to try.

「それ、えんりょせず に、すきな だけ たべるといい」
"Go ahead, don’t be modest, eat as much as you like."

　とのさま の ことば に、いっきゅうさん は おてら では たべては いけない こと に なっている にく や さかな を パクパク と たべました。
　Upon hearing the lord’s words, Ikkyu proceeded to eat all the things he was not permitted to eat in his Buddhist temple, things like meat and fish and such.

　それ を みた とのさま が、かんしん して いいます。
　The lord was very impressed by the sight before him and spoke out.

「よく たべるのう。
"Why, how you eat so well.

　それに しても、なんでも とおる のど だ」
　For a boy like you ,its amazing to see that anything goes down your throat ."

「はい。
"Yes.

　わたし の のど に、とおらない もの は ありません。
　There’s is nothing that cant pass down my mouth.

　いうなれば、とうかいどう の ような もの です」
　Just like The Eastern Costal road of Japan ."

「よし！」
"Ok then!"

　とのさま は、その こたえ を まっていた よう です。
　It seems the lord had been waiting for such an answer.

　とのさま は かたな を ぬく と、こわい かお で いっきゅうさん に さしだしました。
　The Lord then, drew out his sword and with a terrifying look handed it over to Ikkyu.

「では、この かたな を のみこめ！
"Well then!  Swallow this sword!

　なんでも とおると、いった のだ。
　You say anything will pass down your throat.

　これが とおらぬ とは、いわせぬぞ！」
　Don’t dare say this will not pass! "

　しかし いっきゅうさん は、へいき です。
　However, Ikkyu seemed not to worry.

「はい、わかりました。かたな を のみこめば よい の ですね」
"Ok, I see. So you want me to swallow this sword eh."

「なに？　ほんとう に、できる のか？」
"What!? Can you really do it? "

「さきほど も いいました が、わたし の のど は とうかいどう の ような もの ですから」
"Like I said before, my mouth is just like the Eastern Coastal road of Japan."

　そう いって いっきゅうさん は かたな を うけとる と、きゅう に コンコン と せきこみました。
　After saying so, Ikkyu picked up the sword ,but suddenly started coughing.

　やがて せき が おさまる と、とのさま に いいました。
　Before long, Ikkyu stopped his coughing and spoke out to the Lord.

「これは ざんねん。
"This is a regrettable thing.

　たった いま、せき が とまりました。
　Why, just this minute my cough has stopped,

　せき も せきしょ も おなじ で、いったん とまります と、なにもの も とおしては くれません」
　It seems my throat is just like check points on the Eastern Coastal road, once they stop coughing up permits, then there is no passing."

　それを きいた とのさま は、おもわず て を たたきました。
　As soon as the Lord heard these words, he clapped his hands together in awe.

「むっ！　さすが は いっきゅう。こんかい も よ の まけじゃ」
"Damn! Ikkyu truly you are the greatest. This time you have also won against me.

　こうして いっきゅうさん は、またもや たくさん の ほうび を もらいました。
　And once more, Ikkyu received a great number of gifts from the Lord and went on his way.
